Large windscreen wiper scratches
28.01.10 at 12:16:20

Hi all.  Some muppet who had the car before me didn't look after it very well and has left a nasty and unsightly scratch in a big arc right across the windscreen  Smiley

Why are people too lazy to buy new wipers?!

I've seen a few DIY polishing kits on Ebay etc to be used with an electric drill.  I don't fancy failing the MOT because of it.

Is this the best way to remove the scratches or am I likely to make things worse?

Any recommendations? Smiley

tried one of those kits once and had little success they only seem to remove very light marks and can ruin the glass if too much heat, but that was just my experience Smiley

Most helpful guys, thanks  Grin

I haven't got glass cover on my insurance so will need to pay the excess aparrently.  I'm 25 so the excesses are £250 on TPFT.  Gavin from Autoglass reckons it's about £350+ for a new screen.  Might have another look about for a decent kit and just get big Gavin to fix the chip for £71.

I got my windscreen done on my insurance last year, following a (genuine) crack.
I'd shopped around as I didn't think it would be worth geting done on insurance. The only heated ones around were the Genuine Land rover ones at £200 (plus fitting).

I happened to see the bill Auto glass had done when I signed for it  Shocked. I felt quite sorry for my insurance company. It is going to take them several years to recoup that from me.

I don't think it'll be a lot to get a second hand screen but I bet the labour charge would be hefty.  The guarantee on Autoglass' workmanship says if the screen still cracks after they fill the chip they'll replace the whole screen for as long as I own the vehicle.  Can't say fairer than that and it's even cheaper if I go into a branch.  Waiting for a scratch removal kit to be delivered in the meantime.

Will keep you updated on how it goes, JP.

Booked in with Autoglass tomorrow night to fix the chip @ £71.  Unfortunately, Autoglass say that the screen could still cause the cause to fail the MOT, even after fixing it.  It's up to the testers discretion apparently.

Travelled 25 miles to be told that they can't fix the chip as it might crack when they put pressure on it.  At least they were honest.  Think I'll just hope for the best until insurance renewal time and pay the glass cover excess and get it sorted then.  Should sail through MOT then hopefully.

Hi, they did ask some basic questions over the phone when I booked the appointment but used the usual "size less than a £2 coin" rule of thumb.  Which my chip was. At least they didn't go ahead anyway and end up cracking the screen.

Forget Autoglass, bunch of numpties, try National Windscreens (AKA National Mobile Windscreens), chip repair £25+vat if you go to them. Also when I got a qoute for new windscreen on a Vectra B they told me something like £80+vat when I asked why so cheap, apparently they don't charge for fitting, just the glass  Shocked
