JTD/biodiesel - any issues?
08.04.12 at 14:48:09

Does anyone know of any adverse effects of running a Ducato 2litre JTD engine on pukka biodiesel?  I know common-rail engines don't like veg oil too much.  The van the engine's in is a 2005 and has less than 15000 miles on it (yes, it's a camper van!)

Ok, won't do it.  Anyone want to buy a Ducato JTD campervan, so I can buy an older diesel and run it on veg/a petrol one with LPG?  Thought not!

You can buy a lot of diesel for £300!  If it improved mpg by 10% it would take over 3 years of current use to even out the cost, and I'm not sure we'll keep it that long.

If its PROPER bio made to the BSxxxx etc - filtered to 2 microns, properly titrated, separated, washed and dried - it is theoretically fine to add about 10% Bio to normal diesel on a common rail engine.
The main issues on common rails are they are much more suseptible to poor fuel quality due to the tight tolerances, and the potential saving is often outweighed by a £2500 bill for new pump and injectors. - even by using "good fuel"
Often though, folks mistake serving up some sieved heated chip fat for "bio diesel" and wonder why it destroys a CR engine (or any diesel ...bar old mercs) for that matter.

If it was an older car you can often get away with 50% mix of proper bio - but you need to change the fuel filter  a few times for the first few thousand miles as the bio is a very goos system cleaner - and it dumps 10 years worth or gunk in your filter - which starves the pump and blows it up after 3 tankfulls.

doesn't "normal" diesel often already have 5-10% biodiesel content anyway?  was reading a thing about MAN trucks the other night.  biodiesel is hygroscopic and if it is stored for ages gives injector problems on the euro5 versions

vegetableoildiesel.co.uk is a very good site for veg/bio advice with installation diagrams etc. They also have all the advice and experience of which engines can take veg. The VW 1.9 tdi engines right up to the 2004 Skoda (slightly older if on a VW) like veg oil, depends on the fuel dilivery system too. Even a fuel tank pick-up pipe filter size can make a difference with the veg getting through or not. Must be plenty of slightly older camper vans with that engine in.

normal diesel is 100% mineral based I think (but could be wrong) - 10% bio is B10, 30% is B30 - ie it states there iis a bio content in the fuel.

most common  rails will run perfectly on B5 or B10 fuels that are commercially produced - think these are more popular on the continent , esp  France.

No, they won't turn a blind eye - but it's not as if the vehicle's "standard" once you've bought it in the first place!  If I was to chip-tune/remap the van, the insurance would be getting told.

Anyway, boosting power from 84bhp to about 110 in something weighing around 3 tons is not exactly going to turn it into a road burner, it'll just make it less slow.

One other thing to bear in mind with running veg oil/bio in diesel engines is that if it finds its way into the sump it doesn,t mix well with modern engine oils and can cause a lot of damage.

So factor in more regular oil changes Lips Sealed
