Roly definitely had a wacky sense of humour. I do remember the photograph of the Gloopy outside your house. He just loved winding people up and sometimes didnt really appreciate where the boundary's of a wind up lay. He was always quick to apologise if it was felt he went to far though.

I had forgotton about the Jeep. Wonder if that is still in the garage. Seems strange they had it for a year though, although my XJS did something like 18 months in the workshop once when it needed all the welding.

Would have thought the Gloopy least likely to end up being preserved forever even if it was his favourite as by far the least rare of his cars. To most, sadly it would be just another run of the mill XJ6/XJ40 style car

Steep,
I don't know if the 420 radiator is identical to the 420G. However, if it is, the Ford Contour double electric fan with shroud is an almost perfect fit, with the shroud covering virtually 98% of the cooling fins of the radiator. In addition, it features a slow-start resistor, so that it lessens the electrical blow to the system, AND it has high and low speed features. You can also wire it so that the two fans come on at different temperatures (one on at a lower temp, and the 2nd kicks in when the temp gets higher -- or both come on when the AC is actuated). It also has a high cfm flow.
I am sure there are numerous other similar solutions, but the use of this fan in the US has many on-line articles touting its use in Mustangs as well as JDM tuners.
You can source this fan from a junkyard.

Your replies are all much appreciated. I now believe that I won't have to replace the entire harness, as most systems appear to be working well enough. I do know, though, that the lighting+horn electrics are suspect, so I'll have to trace and fix those on an individual basis, using the procedures suggested here. At least those harnesses can be procured separately.

Hi ?? (R-101).

Sorry to hear of your health issues.

Try now and see your Mk2 not as " a bare metal heap of junk"
But as something for you to refocus on and make that dream of yours a reality. Four years ago I had major cardio issues which have left their mark on me BUT two years ago I started to go back into my garage / workshop and found if I used a stool to sit on I was able to do little pieces of work I never thought I would again be able to do. I 'refocused'.
Mentally this was better than the pills the doctor prescribed at the time. One needs to be focused and you have the perfect car, yes, perfect car to concentrate your thoughts and energy into. One of my cars is a 1963 Mk2 3.8 MOD which i have approx 11 years and what a beautiful car the Mk2 is. Keep the faith.
Eugene
AKA old jag man.

Hi Andy, further to suggestions given I would also check the earth feed. Always a good idea when trying to source such problems is first ensure a good earth is provided and then you can follow the power to find a break causing the problem.
Good time to 'clean up' any other earth points in the vicinity you may be working.
Good luck
Eugene
old jag man.
