Hi.
I have a '64 Mk2 3.4 Auto, and a 2001 S-type 3L Petrol as an everyday car.
Mk 2 ; Manual box would probably suit the car as the old BW 3speed auto not so smooth as modern autos. However...on our "twisty" New Zealand roads a manual Mk 2 can be quite a handful when driven spiritedly! Let's be honest - Mk2 looks gorgeous, but it ain't the best handling car on the road regarding corners! So...auto at least leaves both hands for steering! - which I've needed on occasion!
Modern S-type; The J-gate auto is fabulous (why latest Jags ditched this for a "rotary" knob beats me! It gives full auto plus the option of "more or less" manual choice, and it's close to "sequencial". Pity you can't get up to 5th.
Well, in short space available, that's my opinion.
Overall ? Keep the J-gate auto, and someone come up with a way to modify Mk2's to a J-gate.
Best rgds. to all Jag users.
NB: Note well all modern Auto owners .... Manual might say your auto box is "sealed for life". This is only partly true! Modern auto boxes don't have a facility to "adjust" the "clutch-bands" (like the earlier ones did), BUT, they should have their fluid and filters serviced!!! Jaguar agency here in N.Z. told me the auto box in my S-type didn't require ANY servicing whatsoever. On consultation with an auto trans specialist, they said fluid and the internal filter should be changed every 25 - 30 thousand kilometres. So ... think on that! My 2001 S-type has a "Ford" 5-speed auto (remember Ford owned Jaguar at the time), and it's great, especially with Jags' J-gate, .... but, ... it does require some servicing, i.e. fluid and filter.

Australia 1973:
I bought my first Jaguar when I was 17. It was a 2.4 litre model (now referred to as a "Mk 1"). A friend of the family had a lovely Mk 2 in Old English White and chrome wires and I aspired to this car, but being still at school, certainly could not afford a similar car.

I had had a few Triumph Heralds and a terrific 1953 Humber Super Snipe which got 8-12 mpg but that didn't really matter with the price of petrol in Australia in those days. But I wanted a Jaguar.

I saw the Mk 1 advertised in the Sydney Morning Herald (Saturday was the day for used car ads) and travelled into the inner city to view the car.

It was for sale by a very nice lady, her name was Cathy Baikas. It turned out that car was actually owned by a Sydney journalist Dick Wordley, but he was overseas at the time on an assignment. I never met Mr Wordley, all my dealings were with Cathy.

The black Mk 1 sat forlornly in the street outside. It hadn't been used for a few months but started easily enough and appeared to be running well. A bit of rust in the driver's door only, all the rest was solid.

I paid $650 for the old beast and drove it home. It was a reasonable amount of money for a fifth-year high school pupil in 1973 and I was certainly going to "do it up" and love it!

When discussing the car and other things with Cathy Baikas she told me the story of how she had met Dick Wordley. A lovely lady and a very interesting story that (believe it or not) was turned into a movie a few years later):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathy's_Child

It was really a terrific old Mk 1 and got me into a lifetime of owning Jaguars. About a year later I got another Mk 1, a 3.4 litre automatic and that did many miles with me all over NSW.

Then in my gap year (and thus working) I finally managed to buy a Mk 2, a 3.4 with my ideal: manual with overdrive! I was in clover.

Does anyone else have any stories about their cars and their Jaguar passion?

I cannot be more enthusiastic about this YouTube video:

http://youtu.be/G8SQODNCIVs

45 minutes long, HD, really eye opening about how modern cars are built and Jaguar are really state of the art in this respect. 4 minutes to fit the complete engine and powertrain using 36 bolts!

Plenty of classic Jags on view as well. Highly recommended.
I've been away for the last few weeks - since the sad news about Archie's death. Now I come back to find that Roly has gone as well - to say I'm shocked is an understatement. I've now lost both colleagues who also became my friends. My sincere condolences to Roly's family. He will be sadly missed here.
