Wow thats really interesting, It does seem a lot of work to have gone to for so few cars but maybe it was easier than manufacturing a complete bodyshell with the added length incorporated. I accept what you now say about safety not being compromised in this car.

Perhaps another way to look at this is to just to buy the tidiest car you can find for reasonable money and enjoy, whats the worst that can happen? The engine fails and you scrap the car, so what, how much have you lost 1-2 grand, i had this when i was selling mine, I only wanted 1100 quid, the guy buying was a friend of my MD so the car was known, it had 183k on the clock and was pretty much immaculate, he wouldn't buy because he didn't want to take the risk of the mileage, so he would rather buy an unknown car for more money with less miles to lower the risks, what on earth was he thinking, he was only risking 1100 quid at the most for a known car, yet surely an unknown was a bigger risk? This is how I look at it, I don't pay any more than I am prepared to lose, I never consider the resale price and I think myself lucky if I get say 4yrs good service from the car, anymore is a bonus, if i get something back when i sell then that's another bonus. This time around I chose a V8 3.5 X350, set a budget of 4k plus my old VW Golf, I ended up with a 2004 car with full Jag history for the Golf plus £3200, even if i have to spend £1500 to keep it on the road for the next 4yrs (I do my own servicing and repairs, which helps) then for me that's a real bargain for such a car (£56,000 new) and if the engine or box goes pop all i've lost is 3k and i'll start again. So if you're only paying a grand expect some bills and way it up, you could after all buy a 2-3yr old car and pay 30k and still have failures.

Hi,
Thanks for the info and link. I'd read about the blockages etc, but without the diagram I was a bit unsure where everything was. I will look into this.

The blower motor isn't working so I'm working on removing that too, harder than it looks in the photos!

It's a 92 Sovereign.

Thanks,

JC

Hopefully someone who knows more about the heating system on the Xj40 will respond, but I wouldn't buy replacement motors without checking other components first.

For example, on the X300 there are sensors, resistors and and an electronic control module that can all fail and cause the blowers motors not to work.

The fact that one of the motors starts and then slows down again may point to electronics malfunctioning rather than the blower motor(s).

Hi to all ,

We now have the answer to the problem , turns out as we suspected the alternator was the problem only charging now and then , but this was caused through bad fitting by the auto electricians who fitted it 2 years ago .

They must of lost the correct locking nut for the main cable and simply used any nut they could find , this then worked loose and caused arcing which eventualy burnt out the alternator and lead , we was lucky the car never caught fire .

So another alternator has now been fitted and all is well ,except for the hole in my pocket .

Alan .

I had an x300 3.2 and used to average 19mpg, this was mainly short runs to a from work, on a run it would get 26mpg, the same run on the x350 3.5 is returning over 30mpg, mainly due to the high gearing and perhaps the lighter weight. My experience so far of the V8 is that is a much better engine in terms of power delivery, but is addictive, the sound encourages spirited blasts, followed by effortless high speed cruising, compared with the straight six, which I found to be rather gutless at low to medium rpm and a bit high revving for cruising at speed.

Get the V8, try and get latest model you can to avoid the reliability problems of early ones.
