Battery Conditioners
15.02.2006 at 14:38:58

Hello All,
I am new to this forum so if this has been aired before I appologise .
In the March edition of JWM a Mr Burgess of Coventry was enquiring in the Technical Q&A Letters if he could use a Battery Conditioner on his New S Type with the Battery in situ. The second part of his question was if so, could JWM advise on a suitable type which they didn't . The answer is yes you can, and I can recommend two types. For many years I owned a selection of Classic cars which where only used in the Summer Months, in order to maintain the Battery in those Days I had to disconnect it and use an ordinary Charger and carefully monitor the Charge Cycle, even then this gave rise to premature battery failure. About Four years ago I was at a M.G. parts Day when a stall holder Demonstrated the then new to U.K. Battery Conditioner. Made By Banner, it's called the Accugard. See www.bannerbat.com This gadget maintains the Battery, is self regulating protected from temperature rise and power surges and can be left permanentely connected to the insitu Battery. Connection is via a selection of supplied Cables one of which can be attatched to the Battery leaving an easily connected/ disconnected Plug and Socket arrangement. Since then, whilst looking to buy a second one I have discovered the Optimate 3. This works exactly the same uses the same connection cables but has a desulphating cycle incorporated into the Charging sequence. Both are around the £45 mark. Using these has extended the battery life on two of my little used Cars and in effect have paid for themselves. In order to use one on the S Type which has the Battery in the Boot I have rigged up a flying lead to just outside the Boot Lid which means that I can connect up withot leaving the Boot Ajar therby leaving the Alarm Armed. I am sure that other owners of Little used Classic cars Etc. Are are already aware of these Conditioners and I am surprised that a Mag representing us couldn't suggest a type. I have the address of a good supplier of Batteries and Conditioners if required. Finally if anyone knows Mr. Burgess will they please pass this on

Hi Eddie,

A bit late for a reply but I now feel able to put my 4 pence worth in.

I used to use an Optimate to look after the battery on my motorcycle, as the bike was fair weather use and in the Uk that meant not too often  Sad I bought the Optimate. However I am not sure it did too much good as after about 8 months the battery failed cto hold charge at all. The new one only lasted just over 1 year despite (in spite of ) regular use of the Optimate, warranty for the battery was 1 year I believe so no joy there.

Given this I decided not to bother for my XJS, however I had a battery fail in < 2 years and it was a heavy duty type, luckily this was replaced under warranty just a few weeks ago. Jag is used most weekends if I can so definitely gets more use than the bike. Failed in the same way though, not holding enough charge to start the car.

So now I am not sure about what is best, use a special charger conditioner and get about 1 year or leave alone and hope for the best by getting failure within warranty period.

Cheers
Mark

Hi all,

I thought this item looked interesting, as long as you don't store your car in a garage, or under a cover  Wink

One of my friends swares by them and keeps nagging my to put on in the series III. I have never used one myself but like I say he is a big fan of them and uses one for his trailer tent and another in his classic car (never mind the make - lets just say it is not a Jaguar).

This friend is an electronics engineer and blames premature battery failure down to modern production methods (? Undecided) and has used his chargers on the same batteries for a few years without issue.

We have a account with this supplier so I might just tag one onto the next order and see what happens. Smiley

Best regards

Steve

I've just spotted the product Q&A section at the end of this Maplin page. Someone has raised a question whether it will affect an activated alarm/immobiliser.

I too have had the same trouble as Marsta with an optimate when leaving it permanently connected as you are supposed to be able to do, and know of others who have had the same problem with other makes of battery conditioner. So long as I only connect it overnight every 2 weeks or so battery life is OK.

What some consider to be a good option is to fit the battery from your laid up vehicle to the vehicle you are using in addition to its battery. Connect it in parallel, (NOT SERIES). This gave a battery life of over 8 years on my suzuki that is laid up in winter.

Cheers
