jwm magazine
29.02.2008 at 14:29:37

Hi there all at jwm like the mag but a couple of gripes firstly front suspension overhaul [classic workshop] don't half drag on [3months and still not finished] secondly received my back issue for April 2005 and couldn't help but notice how much nicer the back pages were in the shiny paper and the little photo's were clearer too. And while i'm about it how about some more articles on looking after your xj40 [there's a lot of us out there who can't afford the later exotica] regards Derek.

Derek, thanks for your comments – your thoughts on the paper have been noted – and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Re the suspension overhaul - what can we say, we've started so we'll finish! It is, as you can see, a big job, but as it's relevant to so many cars it's worth doing it properly. You will, however, be relieved to hear that it concludes in the April issue, on sale 14 March.

As for the XJ40, just to prove it's a model that is certainly not ignored, there's already a full Owner's Guide in place to run in the May issue - I hope it will be of use.

Cheers, Matt

Hi Matt, if only my gripes were as simple as the ongoing XJ40 job...

I have decided that enough is enough and have canceled my standing order with my newsagent. The magazine has been taken over by 'modern jags' and the XJ-S bulletin (as I feared) has been relegated to the pages AFTER the 'next month' teaser...
The price of the mag is also unacceptable. £4.25 for 50% adverts? I'm not stupid, I know that advertising is important for magazines to stay alive but this is taking the piss.

Sorry mate, but I can't justify nearly a gallon of petrol for a magazine that tells me about stuff I already know....

I'll stay on the forum if you'll still have me, but the mag is a no no.

Of the three Jag mags I read each month, I find JWM to be the one I most look forward to. Still, I quite like reading about the modern cars, even though I can't afford one. My old car needs/interests are catered for by the Club mags. Cheers, Archie.

That's my point Archie. I used to look forward to reading the latest issue of JWM but lately it has become (to my eyes at least) a puffed up sales brochure for the new "gorgeous" Jags, of which I am not at all interested in. I can't afford a new Jaguar and even if I could, I wouldn't be able to get my hands dirty servicing the thing because of the complexity of the modern cars. The majority of the rest of the magazine consists of adverts, which I am aware are necessary to keep the cover price down (!) That hasn't stopped it going up to £4.25 though, which to my budget is excessive for the 25% of content that I do actually want to read! Having said that, the recent XJ-S front subframe replacement article was really good. Shame that it came out 18 months after I'd actually done the job... Angry

I am a member of the JEC, and as such take their magazine. Much the same content as JWM but I also get the benefit of club membership for my £30 pa...
JWM is a luxury at £51 pa ( £51? it still wouldn't fill my tank!)

Look at it this way, with petrol prices in my neck of the woods having now exceeded £1.10 per litre for base unleaded, and no hope of selling a 20 year old gas guzzling 'daily driver', I am having to tighten the purse strings mate....

Terry
I can partly see your point.  The coverage of the new XK was, I felt a little too much for the first couple of months with the expect..."First drive"..."we see what it's like in the UK"...."we try it against the German oppposition"..."we drive it with the roof down".."XKR..mmm more power" .  While I can see the arguement of a new sports car (or any car) from Jaguar is a big event after 4 or 5 months solid coverage I think even the most ardent fan was getting weary of it.

Taking this months magazine as an example I think the mix of old and new stuff is about right.  Articles on the XJ6/XJ8, E Type, D Type, Le Mans etc.  Agreed adverts are about 40% of the content but so are most magazines these days.

Personnaly I can't see the benefit to most readers of mechanical repairs or restoration articles that seem to go on forever and show the same pair of oiley fingers around a broken old left hand threaded widget.  This is not just a comment on JWM or some of the club magazines as well.  If anyone were relying on these articles to get their car back on the road they should employ a mechanic now!

I think the XJSB bulletin is still a little hit and miss...although the articles on the Group A car is something you won't see elsewhere.

I don't have a complaint against the price...£3.90 per issue if you subscribe is always cheaper than the local newsagents.

Regards
David

But I was quite dissapointed in the L to B write up.(Not enough of it and nowt about the muddy conditions en route.)

And of course I wasn't in it Grin Grin

Matt, glad to see that my comments [and others] about the quality of the paper in the classifieds have acted upon , a good improvement . Suggestion for a future article a DVLA survey of xj's still in circulation,ie taxed, sorned and scrapped the Rover sd1 club  produced one [for sd1's of course] about a year ago and gave an alarming insight into just how few were remaining, i think it would make interesting reading cheers Derek.

regarding the mag. i found it very useful for selling bits and advertising wanted usually sell things within the month that the mag is current, the only gripe is your system isn't very good at removing them, a wanted add was in for 8 issues and i could have bought dozens of them in that time, a for sale add in last months is still running and i am still receiving calls, i have notified Matt but it is annoying for the prospective buyers,
still a good mag

Thats the problem with advertising in magazines/newspapers.  Loads of publications just scour the ads present and repeat them without bothing to call and ask permission or find out if the item is sold.

I advertised a suite a few years ago in the local paper and was getting calls for about 3 months afterwards.  The people were quoting publications I had never advertised in and in some cases had never even heard of.

I think Jaguar World and the Jaguar Enthusiasts club share a lot of their small ads.  Plus a full small ads section promotes it's own use...even if half the stuff has been sold.

My general feeling with single-marque magazines is that they make pretty dull reading, by and large.  There are only so many articles that can be written about a marque and quite honestly, when it comes to cars, variety is the spice of life.

I've tried reading it (and the other Jag mags) - honestly I have - but they're not worth the cover price or the effort it takes to read them.
