To get the ball rolling , are we all in favour of a 2010 meeting along the same lines ie: at a small hotel , possibly moving on to a car meeting on the Sunday .

Lindy and I would definitely like to attend another meeting, arranged just as Alan suggests.
We will make sure we keep the whole weekend free next time, so that we can join a Sunday Starship excursion.
Regards to all

Driving in convoy with you Alain reminded me again how fabulous our cars look in motion.
When we peeled away at our respective turnoffs, it was with real sadness that our 'run' was over.
It would be great next year to include a small road rally in the weekend, so that we can see our cars driving.
I've taken part in a few, from gentle cruises to timed events.
I'd be happy to help.
As a second thought, if any SSOC members would like to visit the picturesque town of Honfleur in Normandy for a weekend, I be happy to organise something from here.

Re Starships meeting at Honfleur.
Great idea Philippe, but Lindy and I would hope to combine it with our annual French excursion. The only logical ferry crossings for us would be Portsmouth to Caen/Cherbourg/St Malo, which we feel are hard to justify for a 2 day stay. (100miles East to Dover on abysmal British roads, only to go 150 miles West from Calais to Honfleur would not be our preferred option. Newhaven - Dieppe might be available, which would be fine. I only mention all this as I presume other SSOC members will have similar issues, subject to where they live - Roly being a case in point at the Western reaches of the M4). However, please count us "in" subject to the practicalities.
We are basically VERY keen on the idea of a French meet.
With best wishes
John & Lindy

Are there any ferries out of Portsmouth/Southampton across the channel these days as that is at least more central to the south of England.
Remember watching the hovercrafts pull up on the beach from childhood day trips to Southsea and I know the IOW is served from Portsmouth.
Sorry if I have butted in on the SSOC owners only preserved thread
Not sure if hovercraft are even still in service these days

I'm another following all this with interest
. There's the catamaran out of Weymouth gets you to St Malo in a few hours. Stops off at Jersey and Guernsey if you fancied a longer break. Expensive but a starship or two driving around Guernsey would be a sight to behold!! Good deals can be had in the off season. There's also a traditional ferry which is an overnight trip.

OK , that's only three of us so far for a 2010 meeting in the UK , we need more cars than the 2009 meeting as a minimum , so please get those cars working and place your interest here .
Spread the word , where ever, and when ever , you can .

Roly , you do realise the three of us so far who have shown an interest in a 2010 meeting doesn't include your good self , i am still waiting for your response , but i can tell you this , if your not going , then nor am i ,
I will put something in the events section as soon as i have a firm commitment from all the members of the S.S.O.C , just you and Matt left to reply .

Will it be at the same venue?
As I was 3/4s dead on the last meet.. then I could be completely brown bread by 2010.. I just hope I am not telling porkie pies here.
Nearer the date would be good for me to say yes.
plus some pics of me to say " I was there"!

Hi to all members of the S.S.O.C ,
I would like to get the ball rolling on the 2010 meeting , and would like to put forward this suggestion , to hold the meeting on a Saturday previous to a large meeting of Jaguar cars . We could all attend the larger meeting on the Sunday and travel in convoy .
We could possibly attract more "starship" owners this way , also we could include all members of the J.W.M Forum to join us , which for those traveling a long distance to the larger meeting would be a welcome break .
Your replies please , once we are all agreed i will put this up on the MK10/420G meeting thread bringing it back to life .

Great idea. Lindy and I are all for it. About the convoy though. Is everyone comfortable with our normal cruising speed in ROB? I suppose we could go a bit slower if we must.

Welcome to the board of "starship" owners Alex , yes it is a tough job to join as many have tried and failed in the past .
I will ask all current members to vote by a raise of hand , shouldn't be too difficult to count
No black balls in this club , you just need to attend the 2010 meeting , but please feel free to participate here .

Hello peeps ,
Prescott is an open event to all , no need for membership for this event .
There is a Hotel called the Rising Sun at Cleve Hill five miles from Prescott with a large car park we could use for our S.S.O.C meeting on the 5th of June 2010
I understand this is not central for everybody but would make an excellent choice for our meeting and
Sunday entertainment .
Two more "starships" will be at this hotel if we decide to use it , the choice is yours , please reply ASAP .

He's not a member of anything that I'm aware of, and he works out of Spain, but keeps his car over here. He's a good bloke who may well be up for this. Keith knows him too - Reg the Van! Hi Alan, You've got the right Reg! He calls his car a Mk X but Keith assured me that it's a 420G. Don't know about the transmision though. I bumped in to him at a great show at Hooe, Sussex this year. We had a long chat and of course it transpired that he'd had problems with paintwork issues, and that he was getting that sorted after Keith (Xjrestorations) had sorted some mechanical work. So he's kind of a provisional member I reckon.
Would you believe he bought some strawberries and gave me a punnet!! Delicious they were too. Cheers, apax.

Would you believe he bought some strawberries and gave me a punnet!! Delicious they were too. Cheers, apax.
Well Archie you are irriesistible
i just pray i am treated in the same manner , i love strawberries with real cream of course .
This is very good news for the S.S.O.C , possible new members with hopefully more "starship" contacts .

Count me in for next year! I don't imagine I'll have managed the respray by then (I have only just found out how expensive it is to spray 2 acres of car) but we should at least be MOT'd and structurally sound by then!

Well done Alex , the S.S.O.C is for all "starships" irrespective of condition so don't worry, no prizes for best car allowed , but a commemorative mug in my opinion is worth it's weight in gold .

Hi Peeps ,
just to let you know we did get a mention and photo in the November issue of JDC .
Starship Enterprise
Plenty to talk about this month and lots of great photos , too. As usual , size is not everything when it comes to the Classic S Type Register because we may be small , but we have some jolly big cars . And this month , its the biggest of them all that steals the limelight . There can't be a more impressive sight than a whole row of Mark 10s and 420gs , polished and lined up for inspection . But how often does it happen - apart from when Dave Anderton brings his pair of beautiful beasts ? . Well thanks to Alan Gregory , four of the massive met up at speen in Berkshire , and in spite of the rain , one car came all the way from France . Next year Alan is planning to repeat the event with a convoy (line astern ?) to a club event . My primary objective is to have fun with the last of the big Jaguars " , he says . Perhaps Alan would like to bring his starship convoy to Prescott next year for Classic S Type Day and we could make the Mark 10 / 420g the main theme of our annual event . The sight of them going up the hill would be worth a few snaps .
These are the magazines words not mine , an article of our meeting was submitted which was very good indeed and a great shame it was not used ( something to do with protocol ) . But " HEY " we got a mention and are most gratefull of this .

I had already seen and read that with great pleasure. Well done Alan. Gaynor Cauter has of course got a special interest in Starships, as her husband Len bought one not too long ago.
Having seen it in the flesh at the Ravenswood School (Kent) show, I can understand that they might not have wanted to show it, as it seemed to be in need of quite a lot of TLC. Not important to SSOC members, I know, but does matter to some. They're impressive cars in any condition. Cheers, apax.

All I reckon you need to get a few dates in so people have goals to work to when working on there car.
Another idea might be get the locations of interested parties who are
deffinately
attending the meets then arrange somewhere in the middle

Thank you Clive , but we have been there and done that , if you had taken the time to read the previous posts you would see the date is already set . Not wishing to be offensive but , nobody has a say in the S.S.O.C unless you are a full member .
You are more than welcome to attend the meeting along with any other Jaguar Lover .

Prescott and the previous day's meet of the S.S.O.C are in my diary. Wouldn't it be fantastic to get 10 plus Starships together? Cheers, apax.

The S.S.O.C meeting is not at Prescott but the day before at the Rising Sun . Prescott is on the Sunday 5 miles down the road for those wishing to attend this as well . If you do attend Prescott it is not compulsory to climb the hill .
The hill climb is a timed event , not realy for the MK10/420G to be competetive , but a bit of fun for those who think they can make it .
There is a JDC Dinner being held at the Rising Sun on the Saturday evening , please let me know if you wish to attend this as it has to be booked in advance , again not compulsory .

Hi Alan. What a shame that the 'hoi polloi' have decided to invade the SSOC's space at the Rising Sun! I suppose it was always a risk as the hotel is apparently (according to your early posts) quite close to the Hill Climb event.
For my twopennyworth mate, I think that the SSOC members should stick together and have our own meal arrangements. It worked well like that last year. Plenty of time on the Sunday to 'rub shoulders' with the others.
What am I going on about? - I haven't even got a Starship! I just love 'em! I'll be coming in with Roly on the Saturday, and not staying overnight, but will be there (plus Cab) on Sunday.
So what's the roll call mate? How many have we got and who are they? I saw Reg Hester and Francesca for lunch recently and he seems now to have some mechanical issues, but he swore he'd be there (with Henrietta!) on the 5th! Cheers, apax.

Well with the "knobs" being there as well...I hope there will be room to park my smart car as the car park in that place is not that big is it?? and all those JDC badges will block it up and I need at least a runway the size of Fairford to land my starship.
Remember the last meeting at
Splkeen
The germans were moaning at me for my parking
Hey Arch... I will have to do the trip twice in my starship too,.
And remember there are no seatbelts only a walnut dash to bang heads on.

Hi Archie , i can understand your concerns regarding the JDC Dinner . I have left my booking for the dinner open untill i hear from all of you as to what you would like to do for the meal , i am more than happy for us to stay on our own seeing it is our meeting and not a JDC meeting .
The reason we are at this hotel in the first place is because we were invited to Prescott on the Sunday , and two more "starships" will be at the hotel helping to swell our numbers . Also i thought we had all agreed it would be nice to have a place to go on the Sunday making it a good weekend , this seemed to fit the bill down to the ground .
All i can add to this is the more that attend the better the meetings will become , lets hope we can beat last years numbers , it's in your hands .

Hi Al, No Phillipe? Can I suggest that you only include Starship owners in the numbers so we know how many of the 'real' cars will be there?
Must tell you, that when I had lunch with Reg, he mentioned that there had been serious 'mutterings' somewhere (can't remember if it was in the JDC, and
perhaps
it was Len Caulter, who had been helping Reg with his problems on the 420G) about you starting a new 'Club'. I went to some pains to explain the origin of the SSOC and how it was just really a bit of fun within the JWM Forum originally. It has got a little bit wider now, if we get non-Forum members like Len to turn up, but I can't see a problem really, as the cars are so unique and there has been so little support for them in the past, that it can only be GOOD to get them together en masse!! Cheers, apax

HI Archie ,
No Phillipe this year , and all those listed own "starships" with the exception of one , ( no names mentioned )
Well that is good news , being talked about is what we need , i hope they understand we only meet once a year and are no threat to any other club .
Club is only a word and we could call it a Co - operative if we wished , but this will not happen , the S.S.O.C is totaly independant and will orbit freely .
It is now more important that we have a good turn out seeing we will be under scrutiny , i don't care where "starships" come from as long as they land at our meetings .
I am sure Reg Hester will make it if at all possible , i have spoken to him on the phone and he seems very keen .
Anybody else on this forum is welcome to attend as i have a strange feeling there will be an assortment of other Jaguars in the car park this year .
Lets put on a good show and hope others will join .
No problem Roly i have more than enough to keep us going .
Need to get some mugs done for this year , anybody got a clue who does this type of work

Hi peeps ,
have just returned from a meeting of Jaguar owners , there for the first time was a new "starship" , it was a 63 MK10 metallic burgundy red , " wow " what a stunner .
Have mentioned the S.S.O.C to him and hopefully he might join us at Prescott .

Hello from France to all the SSOC members!
Been very busy lying under another old 'lady' these last few months so Félix has been neglected a little but at last that has now changed!
I unfortunately will not be making it to Prescott as it is on the same date as the Montlhéry meeting close to Paris.
However Félix is in the UK having his engine rebuilt in the midlands and should be ready for the 13th of May.
Alain you only nagged twice about the mugs! Rachel knows that she needs to nag atleast three times to get me going...
Seriously though, I need to find the company that supplied the mugs last year.. will try and get it at the weekend for you.
We will be over again for Goodwood in September hopefully in Malcolm, Rachel's '62 E-type if all goes to plan.
All the best, Philippe

I just wanted to wish all the SSOC members a great weekend and hope there is a good turnout of Spaceships.
Félix and I will be back at Montlhéry near Paris and will be doing our best to keep all those "bl**dy foreigners" behind us.
Unfortunately the new engine deprives me of the James Bond like smoke screen that we used to confuse the enemy last year!
Al the best,
Philippe

Nice pic Philippe! I see you are in there 'mixing it!'.
Alan, I read in the JDC mag that Len Cauter is taking his MK X to Prescott, so we should see it at the Rising Sun on the Saturday. That makes at least 5 Starships! Cheers, apax.

Hi Alan, The reference to Len was in Gaynor's info about Prescott. She said that he wouldn't miss an opportunity to take 'Norman' up the hill. I believe Norman is his Mk X.
What time are we meeting at the Rising Sun? Cheers, apax.

The "Starship Voyager " is undergoing pre-flight checks , at 0.1100 hrs we will lift off heading out along the M25 to rendezvous with the "Starship Henrietta" . We will proceed in a defence formation for the remainder of the M25 , from here we will set a new course west along the M40 travelling in convoy .
Gods speed to all "Starships" and a safe journey .

Just a little update on my trip up the hill , all went well on the 5 runs , and i was very happy with "Voyagers" performance . It was only when setting off for home did i notice the strange noise coming from the rear
we did manage to limp all the way home safely , obviously i was a little over enthusiastic on the hill and strained something badly . (but it was worth it
)
Will post my findings on the forum at a later date .

Perhaps the low start on the 2nd climb has given one of MR Hardy Spicer summat to think about?
well my trip home was sort of uneventful.. First I had a RACE with a Morris 8 to the M5 and he won
. Then I stopped to put my aerial up and let heat rise in engine so as to get the no performance bit back again and retarded dizzy fully as it will go on micrometer etc.Car didnt run too bad and pinking was at a minimum. So will attack timing again soon... as couldnt steer car on way home...with right arm
nor rest arm outta window
.so gearchanging steering rolling a fag all with left hand... just aswell I am left handed.
pic of Lens engine bay..its a 3.8.looks abit uncared for.
I see he has the rad conversion(rusty bits) that my car never got from Jags..in tne beginning)
mine...
look at the way your baby sits man

Sounds like a 'jobsworth' thing. Dogs are banned from circuits nowadays, although I got Max in to Goodwood in 2004 (3?) and nobody minded , as long as he was on the lead!
Understandable, except that Prescott is not a circuit and there's no racing involved. Rules is rules though!! BIG shame, 5 would have been a record. Cheers, apax.

A little update on the "SS Henrietta" our newest member , she also had problems on our return journey from Prescott but managed to limp home safely to Bexhill .
The problem was the 40 year old coil and condenser , all fixed now and she is flying high .

Hi Alan, The guy I spoke to had a very good 420G in pale blue (solid colour), which I think was filled with his family. I didn't think to ask if he was a member of any club, but gave him a JWM Forum card, and he said he would look us up. Hopefully we'll see him on here. His name is Graham. Cheers, apax.

Hi Roly, That certainly looks like the car, and there can't be too many around in that colour! Can't confirm the fishtail exhausts as he was set to leave and our conversation was a bit hurried. Cheers, apax.

Thank you for the compliment - it was ROB. Sorry we did not meet. She was the ONLY MkX/420G at Newby out of 800 prepaid entries, most of which I would think were there on the day. Lindy & I had expected a significant showing of Starships, but no such luck.
Anyway, ROB covered 1000 miles faultlessly during the ten day holiday which embraced Newby. Best fuel consumption 18mpg. Worst 13mpg. Oil - 1 pint, despite much 70mph motorway cruising. They really are splendid machines.
With best wishes
John

Not officially an S.S.O.C meeting but Two "starships" made an appearance at the Windsor Classic Show , but for an unfortunate alternator problem for one ship the count would have been three .
A good day out in excellent company .

Forgive me Al, but I think you've undersold this a bit? I'm always behind with my reading and I've just read the October issue of the JDC mag where I found that this event is part of the JDC National Day. More importantly Gaynor Cautner is canvassing for all Mk X and 420G owners to be there
to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the launch of these models
.
This is of course also the E Types 50th, so there'll be a good turnout from them I'm sure.
I reckon this should be in the Events Bulletin? Cheers, apax.

Well you know me , Archie I'm not selling the 50th Anniversary meeting on here as not to offend anybody , but also trying to drum up some interest in the S.S.O.C cars , for those who can put two and two together this should have been obvious (please don't say five)
I do plug their meeting elsewhere and look forward to seeing hundreds of "starships"
So , calling all "starships" Rushton Hall on the 6th S.S.O.C and the other on the 7th a great opportunity not to be missed .
I wonder which day will get the biggest turnout

Hi Greg ,
we are staying at Rushton Hall on the 6th of August 2011 , there is a very large gathering of Jaguars on the 7th at Rockingham Castle 6 miles down the road which we will be attending .
This has given the S.S.O.C members a chance to meet up in advance of the larger car show .
The S.S.O.C is a very informal club and basically all you have to do is turn up on the day and collect your sticker and mug (providing funds available)
It would be fantastic if you could come along , and swell our ranks of "starships" .
Which part of the world are you located ?
If you need any more information on these two meeting dates you will find them a few posts back .

Hello Peeps ,
just reading the latest up-date of the Leviathan meeting , it would seem they are only anticipating a maximum of 50 "starships" !!! I am quite stunned at this revelation for such a large meeting and hope to see many more .
This news shows how hard it is to get these cars together , from an S.S.O.C point of view we are doing extremely well to have had 5 at our meeting , but if we manage 10 this time we all deserve a medal .
Come on chaps bring those cars along , and tell all your friends to buy one , even just for a day

Al, I know you quoted the club a very informal thing, but is there any agenda for the day. Eg meet in the car park, arranged lunch at Rushton Hall etc
For those who are also going on to the "
Big Event
" at
Rockingham Castle on the 7th
Im trying to get a convoy together of Mk10 420Gs to leave Rushton Hall on Sunday 7th August (Time TBC when the opening time of the event is announced) if you want to join the convoy to create a remarkable spectacle, perhaps a once in a life in time chance to drive your Mk10 \ 420G in a convoy please contact me providing your car model and your name:
Jaguarmk10420gsymposium@gmail.com
Another good reason to join the convoy and arrive at the event early is to receive:
The Special Presentation Certificate of Attendance for the First 50 Mark 10s and 420Gs to Arrive
I beleive this will be an excellent event what ever Jaguar you are an enthusiast about. But with Mk10 \ 420G numbers dwindling rapidly I think this show will bring alot of Mk10 420Gs out the wood work.

Hi Clive ,
yes the S.S.O.C is a very informal club , and as such no plans have been made for the 6th of August in regards to an evening meal etc . I can tell you the S.S.O.C will be arriving before midday on Saturday .
As to the time we leave Rushton Hall on Sunday this will also be decided on the Saturday .
You are more than welcome to join OUR convoy to Rockingham if you so wish .
May be a plugg on your web-site for the S.S.O.C would not go amiss as I see you use the S.S.O.C site to promote your forum .
With best wishes

Hello Clive, What are you doing?? Are you really so unaware that you don't realise that your last post, and some of the previous ones, are in direct conflict with the aims of the Forum, and also cut across Alan's long standing effort to mobilise and enthuse owners of 'Starships'.
It does often seem that your efforts are primarily directed at taking members away from the JWM Forum to get them logging in to your website (and Forum?), which in itself seems a bit cheeky. It might also border on advertising and that's something to consider.
Other than that, the SSOC for MkX and 420G owners was Alan's brainchild nearly 3 years ago and is well established here as THE place for owners to display their vehicles once a year and to stay in touch with likeminded and enthusiastic owners. You arrived late on the Forum, and it would therefore have been reasonable of you to be polite, to acknowledge the status quo, and fall in with what is already happening here.
As to the SSOC's current plans (I'm a member BTW), these were formulated
last year(!),
and it is very relevant that these included the meeting place, and that we could all travel to the JDC Meeting together on the Sunday. As you'll know, attendees for the Saturday have already been committing thenselves to Alan. It therefore would seem quite extraordinary that you should announce your separate plan on here at this late stage, and seems to me quite an unfortunate happening when the SSOC plans are so well advanced.
In the circumstances, I would ask if you might consider working with Alan and the SSOC on the arrangements as opposed to trying to set up your own separate convoy (no easy task). That would also almost certainly lead to confusion on the day.
Could you not accord Alan some consideration for the 3 years of hard work he has put in to promote recognition of these previously
neglected models. It would be truly gracious if you could advise any of your website contacts about SSOC and let the whole weekend, including any 'convoy' on the Sunday proceed under the (hypothetical) flag of the SSOC. What do you say? Cheers, apax.

From reading the reports on Rushton Hall I don't think I would stay over-night/evening meal, lunch seems a better bet, albeit expensive. I agree with Archie, Al has put in a lot of time into promoting mk10/420g it does not seem right to hi-jack his convoy, stick with Al.
All the best Brian

I do admit that I have been peed off for quite a while for the constant reference to carnut's website and yes it it advertising and should be dealt with.
When I first came on the forum the classic car section was very quiet and its only because of the ssoc that this section now thrives and it has bought alot of "starship" owners together.

Well I've owned mine forever so can I be in charge this week
I must say when things start getting formal an order of rank sets in and people end up being like members of other car clubs (like T R) who think they can boss people around at the weekend. Lets be honest we will be so lucky to get 15 cars together at one meet and if we do it's thanks to both clubs, this forum, Alan and Clive. For what it's worth I am quite happy with Alan's ideas and what he has done to promote Mk10 and 420G ownership over the last 3 years. I also don't think Clive is trying to muscle in possibly just trying too hard to promoto the underdog Jaguar.
Let's not become like other 1 model marque clubs !

and looking forward to meeting up with you and the ssoc later in the year.
Well as for the car I've done absolutly nothing to her for far too long as I've been busy e-typeing and other things, but things are looking up know for the old girl, watch this space.

Hi Matt, That beautiful machine just has to be at Rockingham Castle!!
In relation to your comments, as you were at the very first meeting of the SSOC, you will be very aware of Alan's style and that, laid back as he is, there is absolutely no at all risk of the group ever becoming officious. I've lost count of the times he has used the word 'informal'!
That is not the issue. I would suggest that there is a great difference between someone who works for the promotion of the Mk X/420G based on pure enthusiasm, and then also manages to inject a lot of fun in to that process, and the type of person who is primarily interested in self promotion. Alan does not deserve to have his work hi-jacked (and there is a precedent for this as it has already been done in relation to an item about SSOC in the JDC magazine).
I'm hoping that Clive will speak up for himself and clear the air so that there is no confusion on the actual weekend. Cheers, apax

The long awaited road test against a 4.2 and a 3.8 manual mk10 should be going in the JWM mag very soon (all things being equal) and of course I hope the ssoc will be plugged there also.. well at least the stickers will be on show on the respective cars..
Both cars have had an extensive top end overhaul and this should be a good test.
But I do expect the 3.8 to come out on top.
(except for looks.)
The ssoc is NOT made up of members who are "here today gone tomorrow". But total lovers of the starships.

Hi to all ,
just to say I have been observing the posts in response to Clives posting and Archies reply , if any other members wish to add anything else now is the time to do it .
I am at present awaiting a response from Clive either on the forum or by personal mail , after which I will add my 2 pence worth .

Are people forgetting that the forum only exists thanks to JWM, who might not choose to support the SSOC posting if it degenerates into an unseemly squabble?
Should anyone wish to offer an alternative to the SSOC, I can see no reason why they should not do so. However, I am strongly opposed to the concept of using the SSOC thread as a means of undermining the very person who created it.
The SSOC is Al's "baby" and his alone. He therefore has my full support.
I shall now return to the pit (where I belong) and continue my efforts to ready ROB for a year of special celebration.
With best wishes to ALL for a memorable 50th anniversary.

it is all very well hijacking this forum ssoc. BUT ALL members should be allowed their say and whinging about my post is older than your post does not wash. Has this site now become the de facto default site for ssoc protected by ssoc car owning moderators . new input should be encouraged and allow the the other members if they dare there say.

Well, here the two cents from the 'Merican side of the pond: Nasty, down-right nasty and shamefully opportunistic. I think we all have had personal experience at some point in life with this sort of undermining -- one creates an organization, an idea, and someone else comes along to hijack it, and act like it's perfectly natural and okay. Well, it is NOT.
In fact, if you will go back to the very first post from Clive, you will see that sort of character right from the start -- e.g., tried to generate interest to his website for a 420G/Mk 10 project, when this website was perfectly suited for exactly such a project. Self-promoting weiner -- too many people like this in my workplace, so I smell them out the minute they show up. Watch the reaction you'll get -- "What's everyone so upset for???" "Huh? I have no idea what all the hubbub was about!" "If I'd have known there would be this kind of flurry, I would never have said anything", and so forth, as they realize that they have been flushed out and try to regain their dignity.
There are tooooo few 10's and 420Gs to have many one-car clubs in the same country.
That's all you'll hear from me about this subject, so don't fret.

Hi one and all ,
since I have had no response from Clive I shall have my 2 pence worth and put this episode to bed .
The main fault with Clives posting was that it is totally unethical to use this forum to promote any other which you have a personal interest in , and whilst in the process of your posts procure the members of this forum to join .
I can fully understand and appreciate all the responses to this posting .
It would seem Clive was totally oblivious to the fact that the S.S.O.C was holding their annual meeting at Rushton Hall and in doing so had made there own arrangements for the weekend , these arrangements are there for all to see and in previous postings , a little time taken to read these would I'm sure have avoided this unfortunate episode .
I would like to take this opportunity to address some of the points raised in the postings .
I can tell you that Matt Skelton is aware of the S.S.O.C within the forum and has kindly enough promised to give us a mention in the JW magazine within the next couple of issues .
I would also like to explain to you all why it is necessary to have somebody running the show for the S.S.O.C this is simply because now we have members who do not wish to use the forum but need to be able to communicate at such times as they desire , also I now receive emails from different clubs , magazines and individuals expressing an interest in the S.S.O.C . This can only be good for the club the forum and the JWM .
Last but not least , the S.S.O.C is as described an " informal " club but only as far as its style and different agenda to others .
I hope this is all to the members satisfaction and if you have any queries please email me or pm .
15 cars is still a possibility for Rushton Hall and I for one would gladly fall in line behind this fantastic looking V12 to lead this convoy to Rockingham , your wish is my command .
I thank you all
Chairman Al .

anyway...
If yer gonna have a convoy... may I suggest age before beauty.( age of car that is... so older ones at the front as the newer oneS can keep up)
A V12 is a non standard staRSHIP.
Unless the v12 is liable to a breakdown.. then keep it up front and I will bring a tow rope.

More good news , since the article appeared in JWM I have been contacted by Two people , both are coming to Rushton Hall and one of these guys owns THREE "starships"
he has promised to bring along at least two of them .
This brings our total to ELEVEN plus Two possibles , this has surpassed my expectations of TEN and FIFTEEN is now not out of the question . I will up-date the list once a week from now on as new people join up .

I have just read an item by Gaynor Cauter in the JDC mag that tells of a traverse of Paris by an assortment of classic cars. In the process she and her husband were invited to park their (borrowed) 420 (not G!) in a secret carpark where three floors were given over to the owners of such cars who stored (and worked on them?) there. Lots of Ferraris and so on. The place was protected by steel doors, guards etc.. I wonder if this is the same place that Philippe uses to store his 420g and Rachel's E-type? He has described something similar. Imagine that in the middle of Paris (or London). Some feat! Cheers, apax.

I think the place you are referring to Archie is at La Defense, where there is such a car park. The guys there don't get their fingernails dirty as it is parking only.
The association that I am lucky to be part of in Paris sees American muscle cars shoulder to shoulder with a host of other classics. We are 65 members for about 150 cars. We are lucky to have a workshop area for repair and restoration of our cars.
All the best, Philippe

I wonder how they were driven in the test and were they ragged?? as I had just spent a fortune on the cylinder head.

Well at least the magazine will be paying for the repair I hope? I bet they thrash em to within an inch of their lives

dont know whether the chap who was reporting was a freelance or not.
I was told car was pulling well but started to smell of oil and have a top end rattle on way back.
one tank was empty and one full when I left it but no doubt its been moved around alot...although most of time top end was in bits..
only went in for some paintwork and the mag test. But was over retarded to stop pinking and was down on pwr for the test.. think the new 123 dizzy would have cured alot of it as that was the only thing I had not changed..
ther was lots of thoughts on this whether head had been skimmed too much and was the cause of the pinking.. some duff info..that it had the wrong pistons.. turned out they were the right ones and so on... think alot of mistakes could have been avoided.. by so called know alls.sng barrat said she had the right pistons in the end.As for the comp ration some say it was fine some say it was too high.... but it ran for a few yrs with no pinking.. so still wonder if advance/ retard the culprit/
but head has had combustion chambers and valves done etc.. and then this cam bucket stuff.. apparently only one..
when I drove car down 200 odd miles she was fine but..yes abit flat.

They must have insurance for using the car though, if they crashed it while testing they would be liable for repairs so surely if they damage the engine they should be liable for that too.

This has been brought to my attention.
The car was brought to us for some paintwork with the possibilty of a magazine feature.
The car arrived running very flat and barely able to pull the skin off a rice pudding.
The timing had been retarded back by 15 degrees to avoid pinking!
With the timing put right - the car ran very well, but pinkined - pre ignition. Timing was spot on, advance was spot on.
With the head removed - it was clear the head had been skimmed a LOT. All exhaust valves were leaking, and the inlets were also pitted. Calculations made gave a combustion chamber CC of 116cc - Jaguar outer tolerance is 96cc.
The head had all new valve seats and valves. Pressure tested and skimmed again to ensure it is true. Head saver shims were then engineered to return the CC to correct spec - raising the compression ratio at the same time.
As problems had been experienced with the distributor, we offered to fit a 123 system to the car - this was done free of labour charge - and the unit passed on at cost price as the car had been with us for a while following wrong information being given regards the pistons fitted.
With the car reassembeled - it ran exceptionaly well.
Jim Patten from Jaguar World came and carried out the test on the car. Not a man for 'ragging' any vehicle. Mr Hester will testify to the nature of the feature - a very leasurly test along the South Downs on a very sunny day.
On the ride back, the occasional tap started to come from the head. Upon inspection, a valve bucket guide had lifted - causing the tap. Not an uncommon problem - and not an area that is touched when installing new valves. A stake down kit is commonly used - and will be used in this instance. Nothing untoward - just back luck that it has happened so soon after cylinder head work.
The total price for all of the machining work, head rebuild work, valves, stripping and fitting of the head, gasket set, 123 distributor, gearbox oil change, new front cage bushes, new drag link ends, MOT and a few other repairs I cannot recall at present was £2300 inclusive of VAT. Other work has been recommended, such as replacing the worn steering box and the sagging front springs, but funds currently don't allow this. We have always endevoured to do all we can to assist you with your vehicles Roly, doing all we can within the confines of a budget - and often giving away many hours.
The car is currently still with the engineering shop. The last contact I made with you Roly was a reply to you being unable to collect the car at the end of April as you planned - in the reply, I asked when you would next be able to collect. I have not heard from you since.

I do have a good steering box here and new front springs but never thought to bring them down with me..
Alan I am very sorry to have hi-jacked your thread.
But it always works as I got a response.
the problem seems to be that emails have gone astray.
I am sure Walko will clean up your thread if you ask him.

I have seen a proof copy of the propsed article for the magazine...but no mention of the ssoc club and stickers can't really be seen..

Brian, think its all down to the year of car. Remember my old 1977 Datsun 120Y Coupe getting away with things at MOT purely on grounds of age. It was not being tested on/passing on things which would have failed a newer car. Cant remember the specifics now after 20 years or more. Imagine the older the car the more chance it has of not needing particular components.

Hi Jac, I totaly agree on older cars when tested I would expect more play in certain areas and would make desions with that in mind. However there are some parts that do not allow this, if a steering box has excess play, you would adjust the box to within limits, if the worm/peg is worn so much no adjustment can be achived, then it must be replaced, the amount of freeplay allowed on steering box vehicles compared to rack/pinion vehicles is considerable. Al sorry to hi-jack your thread, will now shut up.

Quite possibly Roly the JDC Kent Area 4 had a show today , although this is a 50s car Alan Mobbs has had extensive engine works done in the past , the car has traveled as far away as the U.S.A and Africa . Alan is not known for traveling in the slow lane in any country

Hi Roly ,
yes , Clive was at Rushton Hall and took some great photos of the cars and convoy , these can be seen on his website .
If anybody from here took photos please put them up for all to see , also could you please forward them to Archie Paxman "Apax" for inclusion in the JWM magazine .

Roly, nice to know you havent forgotten me
As Al has already said, a great turn out at Rushton and that meet will be one not to be forgotten for a couple of reasons.
Also the Rockingham Display was a magnificent site after a lot of people including myself felt a bit E-Type 'd out as they have been getting all the press.
It was good to see them in the background behind the gargantuan Mk10 /420G display in the pictues

Hi peeps ,
our next outing is Silverstone if you can make it on the 18th of this month .
You know our meetings are good and unlike any other .
In case anybody unknown to us is reading this thread who owns a "starship" or even knows somebody else who does then please tell them to come along and join us for a great day out .

Hi Peeps ,
We had a good day out at Silverstone and was very lucky with the weather . A total of 7 "starships" and one Caravan
attended , we led the parade around the circuit beating the XJ220s to the finishing line
A Raffel was held at the end to which all received a prize including a portaloo for Johns new vehicle "lucky boy"

Well done Bryan and thanks for taking those shots of the "starships" and my lovely Yellow XJ220 . You would not believe the difficulty I had trying to drive both cars at the same time
Had no idea you was a forum member , you should have come over and joined us , we had loads of food and potent liquid to share .
S.S.O.C members unfortunately cannot afford a camera and not helped by the fact our PR man Archie has gone down with some sort of tropical disease . (get well soon)
Thanks again
