Wheel Balance ?
13.09.2009 at 17:57:20

2003 4.2XKR 95k miles

I replaced my track rod ends 6 weeks back then had my wheels aligned. A month later a took the car back to get the alignment checked and they were out again by a large margin c3degrees. They corrected it again and now a week later they feel out again and I am getting some shaking at c70mph.  Any ideas?  I am guessing that something else could be the issue???

Thanks

Tyres may be worn out of round or may have vaying carcase stiffness. Maybe a bent wheel.
If it was just wheel balance I would expect the vibration to start about 60mph.
Tyre run out could be what cause track rod end wear in the first place.

Cheers

If it was just an incurable vibration I`d also say wheel damage or tyre carcass fault, but if it cant keep its tracking settings I`d say look at things like wheel bearings, front suspension bushes, especially lower wishbone bushes, & ball joints. Could even be steering rack wear/fault or subframe mountings, but they are unlikely.

If any of those are worn its impossible to set up accurately, as the settings would be lost almost as soon as you drive away.

Could also be a slightly sticking front brake.

Hi sorry I havnt been on this for a while, I have bought a 1967 S1 2+2 etype so I am enjoying that at the moment!! Still have the XKR and the wheel bearing is starting to go, not yet critical but that together with the poor roads in Aberdeen following the winter is probably putting the wheel alignment out. I am hardly doing any miles during the better weather, so I will get round to fixing it soon. I plan to run the e type in the summer and XKR over the winter.

Could be worn dampers or damper bushes. This wont show up by bouncing the corner of the car when its stationary. As dampers wear you get a small, maybe only 15 to 30 mm of virtually undamped travel that causes the wheel to patter. This patter starts to occur at around 70 mph. To check it you need a workshop with a dynamic damper tester (not common) or get someone to drive alongside you on a motorway and observe your wheels.
I first came accross this in 1986 on a motorcycle nd have found it a few times since on both cars and motorcycles - always by the drive along side and observe method. Sometimes when you get the damper off you can feel the sloppy bit of travel.
Cheers

The most common cause of  wheels/tires coming out and shaking is that tires are out of balance. Other causes are your alignment is out, your tires are worn on the sides..Or struts issue. There is a chance that you hit something and your rim is bent or damaged making your tire imbalance..
