V12 idle speed?
19.12.2009 at 13:15:03

Anyone know how to adjust the idle speed on a 1993 (xj40) v12, its sitting at about 1000rpm when warm and im finding it a little tricky trying to fully stop in the snow!! Shocked

I believe it's the same as any other V12.  By adjusting the throttle linkage from the back of the engine to the butterfly values at the exit to the air boxes.  Look for any slack, worn or missing rubbers or springs to make sure you get the correct idle and a an instant response to throttle position change.

Regards

I always put any auto into neutral when approching a road junction or similar in slippy conditions, even my smaller engined cars (than your V12) only idling at 750 to 800 rpm tend to push the car out with the front wheels locked.
I took the kids sledging up the fell yesterday afternoon and had a tricky job driving down again, neutral most of the way at about 1/2 mile an hour with the wheels in the gutter to find grip. It has not been too bad driving up but late afternoon after few snow showers nd drop in temperature road was treacherous.
Cheers

Thanks for the help preHE, i have managed to pull it down a little but still seems a bit high but much better, there is now no more tension on the cable, Reading XJ40s thoughts, I think its probably only ever going to cause an issue in ice or snow so will call it good enough for me, Thanks all  Wink

I would check the idle control valve for it sticking but also note that this is water controlled there is no electrical assistance as in later V12 X300 cars, it is the bain of all V12 engines in the XJS and XJ40 cars, the cure is to clean the bore to ensure that there is no grit causing it to bind.

check the AAV, auxilary air valve, I think Jaguar refer to it as the Extra air valve, they gum up and seize, hugely expensive from Jaguar, about £250 from memory, located at the rear of the left bank, there is an adjusment on them, try here first you may be lucky, if not remove and attempt to clean and free it up, this often will not work, I have had them soaking in all sorts of concoctions over the years without success, I just bite the bullet and but a new one!
