Engine Temperature not reaching normal.
09.01.2010 at 19:55:18

I have just read this article on the autoexpress web site when looking to by an X300

Radiator: thermostat failure is common in older models - check for a temperature gauge rising slowly and not reaching 'normal'. It's easy to fix, but troublesome if ignored

My new X300 does not reach normal, could I have this problem?

If I do, what needs to be replaced, also I have a 94 Xj40 Sovereign 4.0 which is going to be scraped, can I use the parts needed from that?

Thanks for the info Alan.

The thermostat on a '94  3.2 / 4.0 litre XJ40 is the same part as on the 3.2 / 4.0 litre X300.
[The Jag part number is EBC3621]

Do you think I need to replace it as I drove it 150miles home when I bought it with no problems and I am getting hot air in the cabin?

Alan.

My 40 and my V12 run usually at the middle but with this inclement weather..then they don't reach anywhere near normal.

Usually the middle of the dial represents thermo opening temp or close, so the coolant should get that hot even in sub-freezing ambient conditions

I wonder if you don't have stuck open thermostats as well?

Cheers

Agree, I have been in Sweden in -25°C, and the needle reached the middle without problems. As a matter of fact, the car handled that trip very well  Wink

well the gauges are not that far away from normal I suppose Undecided But what I was saying is that in this bad weather the gauges read less than they did in warm weather. The other night I was out at midnight picking up my lad from the station...it was very very cold(freezer type cold) heater in car was "warmish" and gauge read less than the "N"maybe by a 2-3 mm.
so stats are OK I would think. Just the cold air hitting the radiator etc. Undecided
maybe I should put a blind on the front grill Cool

My X300 3.2 normally runs spot on normal, but the last week or so struggles to reach center gauge, heater blows nice and hot I just put it down to the extra cold air through rad. Quick warm up rules out stuck thermostat, as it has got warmer today perhaps tomorrow will see higher reading. Brian

I had the same problem of temperature not reaching normal in winter (only up to halfway to N in the temp gauge) and reaching normal after a while in summer  Shocked

So, I changed the thermostat because of it was 2 years since I changed the coolant (green stuff) and had to fiddle with the engine cooling anyway...  Wink  Now the temperature gauge goes quite quickly to normal (even in todays cold weather).  The thermostat was completely shot in the open position and it was the culprit.  Will see if the fuel consumption lowers to a more sensible level...  Wink  Smiley
