new tyres advice
21.01.2010 at 22:04:57

Ok, so we all know that pirellis arent the best tyre, BUT! I cant get 225/65/15 s in any other make.
Do I use a diff size on the front axle , and if so what size and make?
I am guessing that this is a can of worms!

I'd be reluctant to change the size from original spec, as that can affect insurance cover. You might have to stick with Pirelli......

As far as I'm aware, insurance companies aren't that concerned about size. Speed rating, yes. Size, no.

I have had 215 70 15s in the past and these have been OK. I will fit them again. I don't have my handbook here but I think they are standard fitment on the same rims for the American market.
I once tried 230 60 15 but these just to say touched the wheel arch on some corners.
Cheers

I have just greed to hve fitted tomorrow 2 Nexen CP641    215 65 15 for my 88 3.6 for £44 +VAT each. This price includes new valve, fitting and balancing.
215 70 15 raises the gearing by 1% compared with the standard 220 65 390 metrics originally fitted to car.
215 56 15 lowrs the gearing by 2% compared with the standard 220 65 390 metrics originally fitted to car. Which suits me because of the roads I drive on, towing and slight loss of torque on LPG.
225 65 15 are same rolling radius as 220 65 390 so % given above apply to your car also.
Try My Tyres and Black circles websites
Cheers

are these just on one axle, or are you having a matched set. I never used to worry , but with all that performance....

Just on the rear axle at this time, but will put same or similar 215 65 on front when time comes.
The slight difference in diameters, which is much less than wear has never given problems with ABS or anything else.
Lot of factors will affect performance far more than 10mm on width.
A person I know has just started  job at Pirelli in Carlise as they are hiring staff again after years of lay off. He says it because they have just wone a big contract to supply tyres to Jaguar Land Rover for several years.
Cheers

Doesn't it depend on what engine oil you're using? Grin
