Two years with an XJR6
25.01.2010 at 21:41:51

Hi everyone, Im Maurice and i live on the south coast with my wife Maggie.

I always wanted a Jaguar saloon since i had a ride in a 4.2 series 3 as a kid. My dream was realised 2 years ago when i bought a 1995 XJR for my 36th birthday. Ive had numerous cars in the past some good, some bad but always something out of the ordinary. I part Ex'd my Rover Sterling for AIG in Chesham after a rather nervous 250 round trip. The Rover was on its way out after i rear ended a Micra (she has no brake lights) in Lancaster just after the floods of july 2008.

Having read various articles about the Jags, AIG ticked all the boxes and more so. It was originally a company directors and came with much of the options pack including full black leather, aircon, cruise, Harmon Karden upgrade, headlamp power washers, auto dipping mirror, 8way power  adjustable memory seats, 4 heated seats, cup holders and a heated front screen all in stunning Green. Its done 136000 which is verified by the 13 book stamps and previous MOT's.

Since i bought it ive had 4 tyres, new chains and those blessed tensioners. I say blessed as my mechanic stripped her out only to find both tensioners had gone back ordered from everywhere! meaning she was out of service for 4 months. They are now being produced in France, awful eh?!!

She drives superbly but there are a few niggles, the clock display has a mind of its own and the auto dipping mirror fell off the screen and is now kaput, recon replacements are available from the USA for 175dollars inc shipping but pictures are required with a detailed description. E-mail Stacy at
orders@sybesmas.com
and they send all the info. Im still not sure my local tyre company tracked her right and she tends to tramline somewhat. Ive heard of having XJR's tracked under load (4 up) is this true? but as the tyres aren't wearing unevenly i live with it. Oh and i need to have the N/S/R arch de-rusted.

Im trying not to use her until the roads have been repaired espicially in Hampshire, its a bloody discrace we pay so much tax, road and fuel, to constantly worry about balljoints and bushes in our 'first world' country. I wonder if this is speed calming gone wrong!!!!??!!

On the whole i think i did quite well, she does 23 on a run and about 18-20 around town. I can insure her on a classic policy (3000 miles max a year) and get envious looks from most people i pass. My wife loves her and often sits in her when we get home when im making tea.

Hopefully she will never lose in value, as i intend to keep her for a long time.

Many thanks for the excellent forum, its been a great source of information,

Best regards, Maurice.

Ill out some pics on when ive worked it out!!!

Hi Maurice,

Good choice in Jags. These are great cars.

The clock bit is common....there's a fellow on Ebay who fixes 'em up. That's your best bet, IMHO. There are some DIY fixes with mixed results.

The tramlining is also a very common complaint....even mentioned in the XJR magazine road tests of 15 years ago.  It ranges from annoying to terrifying. Tire design is a big factor. Keeping the bearings snugged helps. There's a fellow in the UK selling special upper control arm bushings that are supposed to make a big difference.

Cheers
