Engine oil for XJR-6
06.02.2010 at 16:18:32

Had some conflicting advice, is it 5W30 or 10W40? Semi or full synthetic. Brand recommendations appreciated also. Cheers, Chris.

Well, that site recommends fully synth. I'm sure it should be semi synth such as the Castrol Magnatec.
I hope others can confirm because I was just about to buy Castrol Magnatec semi synth tomorrow for an oil change. Undecided

If you go to the home page you can type in your registration no for exact recommendation.

The edge will give more protection, easier cold weather starting and better fuel economy but it will cost more.
Cheers

Forget anything else.

USE Motul 300V.

It's recommended for V12s, unless you forgot about a certain TWR XJ-S at Bathhurst.

I remember a Tom Walkinshaw (driven) race car at Bathurst as a nipper. I waited all morning to watch a Jag race and as soon as the green flag went down, there was a hand waving high out the window of the XJS. It had died. I was absolutely gutted. That must have been '84 or '85 maybe? For a kid who was into Jags there was no consolation.
So what happened?

I can't remember which year but they were on pole.

I don't think they ever finished a race down under....and the 12 cylinder reputedly fried the driver alive.

Motul was good tho

Multivalve, I looked at the Motul oil you suggested. It's a competition oil, right? The reason I'm changing my oil 7000 miles before the 10000 mile interval is that the previous owner used Havoline racing oil.
At first I thought that was great, car has been well maintained. However, then I read on a forum that racing oils shouldn't be used on road cars as it can harm catylitic converters.
Is there any substance to that? Advice appreciated.

I don't know where that rumour comes from!

The french have been using Motul 300V for decades as well as the semi synth 2100.
You can open oil change intervals then to 15000+.

If you go to any french circuit you will wiff the Motul special smell, and many formulae are insisting on Kats these days.

A metal kat will of course be far far better than any of the old (Jaguar) ceramic brick type ones, and I would actively encourage people to bin them and modernise them ASAP anyhow ESPECIALLY the awful V12 ones stuck in the manifold down/Y pipes.

If your engine is using so much oil as to damage your Kat, then nothing will save it....the ceramic ones clog the pores, and they are in any case like most first generation tech very very lossy.

Having said that, the only times I have personally seen a Kat DIE, was when the rotor arm expired at 100mph.
The Kat continued to burn unburnt fuel for some time, and that killed it "stone" dead.
It was smoking.

I don't think a road going XJR-6 would need to use a racing oil, a modern synthetic or semi-synthetic will be more than adequate, I doubt if many XJR's are used as high mileage cars, more weekend rides, so extending oil changes to 15,000 mls might take years. Better to change it more frequently and get rid of the hydrocarbons. But, if you like the smell then go ahead, in the 60's & 70's many a road going bike or car ran Castrol 'R' just for the smell, waste of money.
  All the best Brian.

Ah, well, this leads me on too my emissions test. I appologise for this going slightly off topic.
The car failed it's MOT and one of the things was emissions. Now I think I may have cured the problem. I had big nasty cracks in the exhaust manifolds - these manifolds have now been renewed. The coolant temp sensor may have been acting up an I replaced it.
In summer I got 28mpg while driving carefully. I then got around 23mpg on a 900mile motorway speed Wink jaunt to London and back. The emissions were checked a week later with no driving in between (except to get to the test centre).
I don't understand emissions, so could someone please explain them to me in laymans terms?

Check and compare the "ZDDP" content of various oils. That's where the cat convertor damage comes from. There was a big flap about ZDDP a couple years ago in the 'States.

FWIW, I use 5/30 year-round and buy whatever name brand is on sale that day.

I don't use synthetic (although I did for a couple years) and change every 5000 miles. The engine needs a one-quart top-off at 4000 miles which, of course, is minimal. About 75% of my driving is at highway speeds, 20000 miles/year.

Cheers

Your HC is off the scale.
That's probably why it failed.
Imagine a failed convertor/blocked filter/plug.

As the poster previous stated it is the HC that is the problem, or over fueling, temp sensor can cause this if it is telling the ecu that it is cold.
