Jaguar replicas - any good?
27.05.2010 at 07:54:03

I've just read the latest JE magazine and was really taken with the article on the Nostalgia Classic 120. This really got my little grey cells tingling.
I am living in Brisbane, Australia at the moment (Jag's are SO expensive here!), but will be retiring back to England in just under two years (I can't wait) and am determined I shall be buying a Jaguar to enjoy.
Trouble is I can't make my mind up what to go for. They all look great.
I'm considering an X type diesel for everyday use and an XKR circa 2003-06 for the odd occasion I can afford to put petrol in it.
I have always liked the look of the SS jags and the early XK models, but they are priced way out of my league so never considered them.
The modern replica XK 120/140's from Nostalgia look great and I quite like the idea of a self build project.
That said, is there anyone here who has actually done this?
I would be really interested in hearing from you on the pro's and con's of such a plan.
Also, are there any other companies doing replica Jags?
I've searched the web but found nothing at this time.
If I were to follow through with the idea, would a replica XK120 be welcome at Jaguar events, or are they seen as fakes and not worth a second glance?

Hi Derek, I can't answer most of the questions you pose, but I do envy you your choice options! One thing worth noting is that most replicas (and the JDC has a special Forum for these) have Jaguar underpinnings. For this reason, in my experience (and I go to a lot of meetings) there is no problem with getting acceptance at any or all of the gatherings of Jaguar enthusiasts.
Another consideration is that some of the older models are becoming increasingly rare and beyond the purse of mere mortals. Good examples of this are the XJ13 and 'Toad's' (Tony Brown) long-tailed C Type replica. Most sensible folk in the Jaguar community will welcome the fact that replicas play their part in keeping the legend alive. Cheers, apax.

I must admit to a slight bias here ...  Wink

Although I have had a string of "real" Jags I always wanted to experience the zeitgeist of 1950s racing with a C-Type. My wife wouldn't let me sell the house to buy a real one (wouldn't have been enough anyway) so I built and raced a Proteus replica. This was a good 10 years ago before Lynx took over Proteus and started asking silly money for replicas. However, there are some other excellent replicas available of the C- and D-Type. I am surprised a web search didn't turn any up as I seem to come across lots if I Google! This month's Classic & Sportscar has a feature you might find interesting.

One of my current projects is a XJ13 replica (of the 1966 car and not the messed-about-with rebuilt original). To be honest, the only good copies I have seen to date are the ones built by Rod Jolley and Proteus. However these are of the post-1973 car so I am forced to create my own from original drawings etc. If cost is an issue and you are looking for an almost-acceptable copy of the current car, the ones produced by The Sports Car Factory and sold in the UK by TWRR are worth a look. They may only pass as a XJ13 with a quick glance but they are well-developed and sorted.

Classic Jaguar enthusiast and racer. Having acquired an original quad-cam prototype V12 engine I can now fulfil an ambition of building and hopefully racing an authentic "toolroom copy" of the XJ13 http://www.xj13.eu

Thanks for the info XJ13. I must confess I have now had the opportunity to sit in a real XK150 and found I do not fit!
I dont know about the replicas but I suspect I would struggle to get in one of those too.
Oh well, on to plan B.
