Changing armrest cover
21.07.2010 at 17:20:57

Hi

My armrest had a small crack when I bought the car 4½ years ago, and it has surely not gone smaller. Now wife has taped it, NOT nice, but I must admit it does no longer schratch my arm...  Wink

I checked Ebay and found this: Ebay
Seller tells me that this item will match my AEE trim (Doeskin) and that I shall just remove the old one and glue the new one.

Experience anyone ??

I have no experience of this item / seller but it looks OK.
Many years ago I had a new cover made by a local cobbler in lerather (original was black plastic / vinyl). It was folded down on 4 sides and only stitched down from corners The foam in my armrest was quite broken up but glueing (Thiofix) the new cover on has fixed it completely. The genuine leather has aged to a different shade from the black vinyl interior but its more comfy to rest your rm on.
Cheers

Obviously easier to buy a complete armrest and fit but no doubt hard to find now Undecided. From what you have said the colour match looks a bit risky so you might just have to take a chance. Roly did something a while back with some leather stain to get an exact match in one of his cars. So if the colour is not quite exact when you get it then I'm sure he'll be happy to re-explain what he did.  Smiley Smiley

No complete armrests on Ebay, so this is probably my best shot. The tape still work though...

...

I remember that Roly successfully did some recolouring, I guess a link to the thread soon pops up...  Smiley

Well I have had a quick look for the link but cant find it... Embarrassed
I used a dye matched to the colour which one can buy in a small kits or large kit and it does come with solutions to make it lighter or darker... as yet I have always managed to get a good match without using the shade changers.the kit is called scuff master.you clean the leather first and apply a coat with the sponge applicator let it dry and do it again"as is needed"...
now what did I doo with the pics>>>
...

Ahh got it..I bought a armrest off ebay because it had a cupholder in it as mine didnt but it was the wrong colour so I put  the scuff master on it layer by layer until I was happy it matched.
...

1st coat
...

2 nd coat
...

3rd and final coat.
...
It may want touching up.. I will see when car gets back from Keiths. but I seem to remember I was pleased with the results..
stuff aslso good for getting rid of wear marks where one gets in  and out of car. Anyone who has seen inside my 3 jags wont see scuff marks.$Even my MK10 which has black seats.
I hope this helps...but I am not going hunting for the oringinal thread..it could be anywhere and even off subject (which would be unusual) Wink
I got my scuuff stuff off ebay but it is in the mags... but the chap I used on ebay was a good one.

Hi Roly

Thanks a lot, I knew I could count on you  Smiley I will buy the dye to freshen up the seats, after 220.000 km and 18 years they begin to look a bit used. Then I can use it on the armrest as well if I need to.

Cupholders, maybe I should try to find an armrest with that. It would please my wife for sure, and that is not a bad thing  Wink

I have a good AEE arm rest 59000 miles old, there are cup holders for sale on ebay new about £90-00, please note that fitting to an XJ40 you need the clip that fits where the magnetic catch sits this is rarer then hens teeth and that you have to modify the hinge to allow the assembly to sit further back on the centre console, there are slight differences late XJ40's are different to early cars.
Contact me if you are intrested in my lid

regards Mick

Thanks Mick. A PM is on your way.

I did see the cupholder armrests on Ebay, but the prices is more than I will pay. Thanks for information on the modifications, thats one more good reason to forget the cup holder and keep it original  Roll Eyes

20 months later, and I have now bought the leather cover in the link in the start of this thread. Really nice work, but colour does (damn) not match very well.
My interior (doeskin AEE) have a greenish tone, while the cover I recieved have a more red tone  Sad

Next step: Scuff master as recommended by Roly...
