Check Rear Lights
09.03.2011 at 09:25:25
I 'upgraded' to a 2004 R in December. Great car, but for one irritating fault. 'Check Rear Lights' keeps appearing at various intervals from the day I got it. All rear lights are working fine. The dealer suggested I change the bulbs. I did and cleaned all accessible contacts, but the warning persists. It disappears once ignition is turned off. I have disconnected the battery to try and erase the memory, but no good.I suppose I could live with it, but why should I ? Anyone with any ideas ?

Could be the brake lamp switch , they can be troublesome and produce the fault you describe , just be aware that there are two types of switch , single micro for non cruise control cars and dual micro for cruise equipped cars ,
Hope this helps ,

I would guess it's the brake lights that trigger the warning being used most and that it happens in daylight. My car has cc and the off-switch for that would be near the brake pedal ? Maybe it needs a good dose of electrical contact cleaner sprayed on ?

The erratic 'cruise' needed a new brake light switch and the 'Check Rear Lights' warning was due to too much play in the seating of one bulb. All sorted by the selling dealer. All's still OK.
