Never having worked on one I don't know if the X308 arrangement is the same as the X300. If it is.....

The hub bearings are supposed to have a very slight pre-load and spacers of varying sizes are used to achieve it.

Replacement bearings are usualy close enough dimensionally so that existing spacers can be used but that can't always be guaranteed. If there's free play to be taken up, you'll need to use different spacers.

It's all spelled out in the service manuals.

Another possibility is the the slack isn't from the hub bearings at all. Not long ago I was working on a Ser III where the rear wheels were flopping like fish, so great was the free play. My initial thought was wheel bearings but it was actually the (near destroyed) fulcrum bearings that were giving the slack when I rocked the tire.

Cheers

Do you have a repair manual? Does it show spacers?  It could be that the X308 hub/bearing design is different from what I described.

Get an old steel wheel and cut the centre out about 20mm outside bolt hole PCD. Weld a piece of pipe or box section (40mm or 50mm) and 1000+ mm long to the centre of the whell you cut out. Bolt this on in place of your usual wheel. You can have someone waggle the bar about whilst you closely watch for play. Its far better than pulling at a tyre and you can see a lot better than if normal wheel and tyre is on.
