Front and Rear Parking Sensors
06.07.2011 at 18:20:40
I have a very small garage and I doubt that my Jaguar would comfortably fit-in hence my reason for contemplating fitting both front and rear parking sensors. Doing a Google search there are many companies offering to fit at your residence both front and rear sensors for £300. The place I bought my Jaguar X-Type from offered to fit rear sensors only for £250. Any experience of these online-firms who offer to fit both front and rear sensors?
I had remote central locking and an alarm fitted to my previous vehicle by an online firm, it took ages to sort the installation out, more than 2 weeks with the 'engineer' having to visit three times!

Hi, you can buy aftermarket sensor kits for £30-£50 and these are an easy fit, why waste loads of money?

That might be okay for somebody who knows what they are doing, I haven't got one engineer-brain-cell in my body:-) [how the hell do I attach smilies to my message?]

If you are not that way inclined then I guess a daunting prospect.
I did the rear of my wife’s Toyota Yaris a couple of months ago. Bought “on line” in the correct colour for about £20.00. All the bits included including a display and bleeper. The most difficult bit was identifying the power to the reversing light. I have to say it works well.
I suspect also the ease of which components dismantle to allow access etc. will play a vital part of how easy the job is.
Happy Days

If parking in the garage is the problem, why not go with the tennis ball on string option ? easy to fit, no moving parts or battery, 100% reliable, go for it !!

Went today to a local hardware store and found lots of things that would help me out.
Foam filled cushion covers for outdoor chairs - ideal to hang on the rear garage wall in case I misjudge the distance.
Foam camping lounger - the stuff that you lay on the groundsheet before putting your sleeping bag down - ideal to layer the wall where the door of my vehicle opens to prevent damage marks. Also ideal to wrap-around the door joists in case I misjudge the width.
Then I would use the 'tennis-ball on string' as you and others so kindly mentioned.
Saves me hundreds of pounds to have some one come to fit the sensors OR me to attempt the job, make a real hash of it and pay some one to rectify my mistakes:-)
Thanks, know where I am going now.

I need at some point to look at the reversing sensors on the Omega. Seems to have at least one not working as it bleeps everytime the car is put into reverse.
Told I will need someone to do diagnostics on the car to find out which sensor is dodgy though as dont really want to have to replace all of them.

Stand Ralph behind the car and reverse towards him and get him to change position until you find the problem. when you hear a eeeeek then you will know which sensor is duff... simples

Jac, most sensors give a single bleep when selecting reverse, this is to let you know they are working otherwise you would not know they had packed up until you hit something

I have fitted Backscan reversing sensors to my X300 when I first bought it 3 years ago, and recently to my S Type, the one on the X300 still works fine (I also fitted one on my Jeep)
You don't have to drill the bumper as the sensors just stick on, you Scotchlok the wires to....on the S Type O/S rear light loom centre wire and wire second from left, one is an earth the other live.
You can buy a Backscan unit for less than £20
..(.I have no connection with the company BTW)
Edit
- the snag is some miscreant could pull off the sensors !

Mine give constant bleeps when in reverse rather like a truck or bus and there are no variations in the speed of the bleeps as you would get if the sensors were working.
Mentioned it to Richard soon after getting the car in passing when I was over there with something for the Jag and he demonstrated to me how it should sound so pretty confident what the problem is but not a big issue

I thpought there was a visual display as well as bleebs.
one for yes
and two for no
three it's too late
Archie I feel those wires look naff man.. better hole drilled in rear end...of car.
how did we ever do without sensors???
my former had em on her streeka.. couldnt see the point.
four long flags on each corner of car would do ..then you can do the royal wave

I have to agree with the others Archie, you need to get drilling and get rid those wires. Oh and this is just a hunch by looking at the boot lid, is your car a V8 by any chance

Fitted some on my Renault Trafic Van. However as they mount on the Bumper, and the bumper is low, I get false alarms on Gravel and when there is rain on them. Easy fit however , they were supplied with a holesaw which cut through the steel bumper too. Simply splices into the reversing light feed.
I guess if you wanted em on a 40 , you would have to use the stick ons as there is nowhere else to fit them.

You should have seen it before.... I had Gaffa Tape stuck on to hold down the wires
I've had one on the X300 for three years but the wires only protrude about 2 " from the boot lid.
Through time I might fit one of those built into the bumper units, my mate owns a recovery garage so he can guide me through the bumper removal process!.

DIY kit from any Motor Factor circa £45.00 for a two sensor inc Monitor ( which I did not fit) or about £90.00 with 4
comes with Tank cutter.
Longest job masking off & marking out prior to drilling.
Then its easy Peasy

I didn't have to remove the bumper just the tail lights which gave me access to the far ends of the bumper.
The kit only cost
£14
on E bay

A couple of millimeters maybe, anyway when I put the pedal to the metal all anyone sees is a blur
The sensors are sky blue they can be painted to match though.

Give the criticism a rest guys, He has tried and not taken the easy option of handing it over to the pros. If I walked around your houses I feel sure that as a Builder, I would spot some diy nightmares. People treat there houses as experiments, but put their cars on a pedestal. Your house is permanent, a car is usually fairly short term. I have done some rubbish work on my cars in the past. Thats how you learn.

Working sensors usually make a humming sound when activated - duff ones are quiet - you just need someone with good hearing to put their ears to each sensor in turn whilst car running in reverse. Tip keep your foot firmly on the brake - good mates are hard to find

Interesting thought, never tried that but maybe doing it with handbrake on would work.
Only aware of the constant bleeping when in reverse. Are they fairly easy to get out once identified or is it a professional job?

Wouldn't trust just the handbrake - why not try it with ignition on, car in reverse, engine not running
Just lever out from rear "bumper" carefully (small screwdriver)

Just picked up a 98 2.5 Sport trade in from a local dealer, 10 months MOT 5 month tax, 3" lift kit and Nitrogen shockers - whatever they are
It drives sweet as a nut, only problem is the central locking doesn't work off the remote I'll soon sort that out
The dealer is interested in buying the Jag when the plates are changed.
