I would like to jump in here , I have owned my 2001 XJ8 LWB Sovereign  for 5 years now and have not had or found any of these problems being mentioned about body work and timing chains so far .

The car did suffer a throttle body and alternator problem and the odd bush renewal but thats about it in 5 years of daily use , so there are  good ones out there you just have to keep looking .

If a V12 Jags throbs and makes a lot of noise you have serious problems. Engine refined, quiet and knows how to deliver fantastic performance.

If you want high reving, noisy, show off throbby stuff go and get something like an Imprezza

[quote author=6F6B636B7A6D6F62686B0E0 link=1317632180/0#0 date=1317632180]Every now and then I get the urge to move on from an XJ40 and buy a X308 LWB Sovereign. I picked out a couple on Autotrader and set off to look at them yesterday.....>>>>>

I have never heard so much bullshit in all my days!!

This just means you are picking on the worst uncared for examples.....wine tatsets on a beer budget.
These cars are very well protected...it's quite obvious that the examples tested have never seen a decent wash in their lives and have been driven on endless salted roads without ever being cleaned properly underneath.
For God's sake...go to a respectable dealer and buy a GOOD car!!

And why the hell would you waste momney on a 16 year old dinasour with dodgy electrics!

You really should come to the UK and look over a few cars before mouthing off so much. There is no bullshit in my post at all - it is fact. The cars I referred to are still on the forecourts and this suggests that others are finding the faults as easily as I did. I have also looked over cars at "reputable" Grin dealers at three times these prices only to find they also had faults they should not have, including MOT failure rust where front subframe mounts.
UK law (sale of goods act 1974) states "goods must be of merchanable quality and fit for the purpose for which they are sold". These cars are being offered for sale for use on UK roads and the dealers are clearly in breach of the law because they are not fit for that purpose because they cannot pass an MOT.
The cars are clearly not well protected (not enough for typical northern UK conditions). The front subframe mount area is particularly prone to rust partially because of thermal cycling due to the close proximity of the unshielded exhaust manifolds.
As for the dinosaur comment - well that could be aplied to any old jag - including the E type but to the enthusiast it is of no consequence at all.
I would say on the whole Xj40s have no more electrical trouble than the V8s and are usually a lot cheaper and easier to fix.
Cheers

I agree that rust is an issue. My x300 had rust all along the underside of the cills. The rear arches are a notorious weak point. By comparison, I'm currently running an 11 yr old old Mitsubishi and that has almost no rust at all.

I don't agree that dealers have the best cars. Infact, I would want to avoid buying from a dealer. With older cars they have limited knowledge about what they are selling and they often don't have the best cars anyway, they rely on people thinking they are getting a top dollar car for a top dollar price, which is often not the case. As for refering to a 16 year old dinosaur with dodgy electrics, I think you are confusing the xj40 and the x300.

In saying "dealer" are we talking about an actual franchised Jaguar dealer or a independant with a corner lot made from a deserted gasoline station?

Not that it's carved in granite but here in the 'States a franchised dealer generally does have the better used cars where the independant is more likely to have the ratty ones. In fact, an independant's inventory is often made up of trade-ins that the franchise dealer rejected as not good enough for sale on their own used car lot.

That said we do have some specialty independants who select and sell only extra nice examples.

When I'm shopping for a used car, Jag or otherwise, I'm looking for the right car, not the right seller. I'm not willing to summarily dismess dealerships as that does nothing but limit choices and selection.

But, as I say, nothing is carved in granite. No matter where you buy you should do your homework first so you know what to look for and what questions to ask.

Of my three Jags two have been bought at independant used car dealers and one from a private individual. The fact is, the two dealership cars were much better than the one I bought from a private party....but I blame myself for that. The private party deal was one where I let my heart overtake my brain.

Just my 2-cents   Smiley

Cheers

There may be some good X308s out there but I suspect people are hanging onto them. All those I have looked at from private to independants (non of the main dealer have cars this old) have some drawback that in my view prevents them being worth the asking price. A good prportion of them are for sale I suspect because of a number of advisors on MOTs that are going to be expensive to fix. I think unfortunately very nearly all these cars are now suffering significant extensive corrosion which occurs irrespective of the the level of care, much like the  type sill problem.

I must admit I do fancy a V8, had loads of yanks in the 70 & 80's, but am put off by the poor rep of the 308, not just the engine probs, but the other changes like front wheel brgs, simple job on a X300 £15 for bearing and an hour to fit, on a X308 £50 for bearing and you need special tools to strip and rebuild. I think the X300 was the last of the DIY Jags. As to corrosion problems my 1997 3.2 has rust free sills and wheel arches, the car is not garaged, but is put up on a ramp 3/4 times a year and any flaking underseal re-treated and arches cleaned down, not with a pressure washer. Also I like to be able to change auto box fluid and filter, not an easy job on X308.

     All the best Brian
