Juddering MkII under light braking
04.10.2011 at 19:51:54

This maybe of use to someone, this year I have become aware of juddering (can be felt and heard) just before the car comes to a stop and I'm lifting my foot. At the time we were in France and the servo was drinking brake fluid so it was put down to that.

With servo and everything bar the front calipers rebuilt with new pistons and seals it still occured, so I took the car to my local MOT station to use there brake test rollers and they found one front caliper was creating the judder and the other binding.

I stripped and cleaned both calipers but found a little more slack in the one wheel bearing than there should. Removing the hub showed wear to the underside of the stub axle at the inboard bearing. This was the cause of the judder. A rubberised mastic was put under the inner bearing (to dampen its movement for now) and the smallest of slack left. I will need to replace the stub axle and probably the bearings for peace of mind in the future.

I have replaced the offending stub axle with a good second hand stub axle and then used Loctite 660 to secure the inner bearing and to take up the clearance on both front wheel bearings. So far no sign of the noise and chattering.

Yes, I have been using it until the other day when they started gritting, as I have been testing front springs to find the most comfortable ones. Tested 4 sets to date and settled on a mostly comfortable set (broke my record of spring chance in 3 hours for the pair). As you can imagine I clogg it over very rough roads and that tests the brakes as well.

I am now waiting for good weather due this week to test new ignition curves for gas and liquid line filters to fit.
