I see the forum has reached the giddy number of 2500 members....come on people, let us know about your Jaguars, post a picture of your pride n joy. Things have gone verrry quiet around here of late, only about 5 of us bother posting, which does not make much to read, so go on let us all know what makes your Jag tick or not tick if its getting on a bit.
All the best Brian

Nah, its because they spend so long away from home getting fixed we start forgetting about them and struggling to remember what they look like
It would be great if I get mine back on Thursday but not really holding out excessive hope as still got my concerns about the brakes so be looked at even though I am assured everything else on my to do list sorted

Hah! This is a good one eh? 'Forum Comments and Suggestions' has been turned in 'Gossip and Chat'. Brian's original comment had serious intent (to encourage members to post) but I personally do not really believe that
any
post is better than none! Cheers, apax.

Archie, you know full well I will post in response to what I read regardless of where it is situated on the board.
If you want to move my posts about then by all means do so but any post really is better than none at all if it gets people communicating. Forum has been dead a a dodo for ages now and seriously needs liven up

Here's a 'Forum Comment & Suggestion' then Archie:
Make Roly a moderator!
I know it sounds daft, but poacher turned gamekeeper and all that. It would stop him posting in the wrong forum sections.
Whatdya think. . . ?

Hi SV8, Can't believe that you don't realise that Roly
is
a Moderator so maybe I'm missing some humour from you somewhere?
My point was not just about where posts occurr but the frustrating flippancy on the subject.
I'm sure I'm not alone in tiring of reading airheaded and irrelevant comments better suited to Twitter! Cheers, apax

Well let's get the thread back on topic then. . .
(Roly doesn't pay any attention to me Archie, he always gives as good as he gets.)
Now the Jaguar internet forum world is a slightly strange place. Because the two main clubs have such dire forums, there (of course) have been a number of internet forums spring up to cater for the modern Jaguar enthusiast.
I will speak as I find and i think this Jaguar World Monthly forum is. . .
the best Jaguar forum on the net, at least in the UK (by saying that I haven't found any better overseas-based ones though).
But the problem with Jaguar enthusiasts (as a sweeping 'in general' sort of way), is that they don't seem to be 'forum people'. I only say that as I observe that these are not very busy forums.
Now, the jaguarforum.co.uk is quite busy, but I think not kept busy by 'club' members, more by people who cannot afford to run a Jaguar and want to know where they can buy second-hand parts, and whinge about the quality when they spend their life savings on a £25 carpet set from eBay.
Sorry, I'm being sarcastic (again), it is a very good forum and there are lots of knowlegeable people on there. But it's not a 'Jaguar-person' type of forum and you don't get any sense of 'family' or club atmosphere.
But
this
forum (although not as busy) is
better
. Does that make sense? There are the large number of knowledgeable people on here and a genuine question is usually answered very quickly with the (correct) answer. And, it is a real 'family'.
There are more real enthusiasts on here, and thus the forum has almost become a 'club' itself.
It might be quieter over the past few weeks because the JEC has put a set of jump leads onto its forum and it has gasped and coughed itself back into life. No real explanation as to why it was put 'offline' for months and months on end, but yes, it's back. But it's just as it was before and it has very little traffic.
And I find all this quite bizarre for a marque like Jaguar? We should have the biggest, most exciting, thriving internet community on the net. The marque encompasses the most 'classic' of classic cars, right up to the most 'exciting' of modern and current cars. What is it about Jaguar people and internet forums?
Some of you are probably aware that I am the Administrator of the Jensen Owners' Club forum
http://www.joc.org.uk/phpBB2/index.php
The JOC is a very small club, about 1450 members (what is the JEC, 70,000+?) but we have a very successful and thriving forum. It started (as this forum did) about six years ago, but has had more messages posted than this Jaguar forum.
Now to me, that is bizarre. Why are 'Jensen people' more willing to get involved and contribute to an internet forum than 'Jaguar people'? It's a strange one and I cannot answer it, but I would have thought any proper Jaguar forum would have run rings around a Jensen forum, with the number of members (and cars) involved.
So, to conclude, it is not only this JWM forum that has be quiet of late, it is a 'Jaguar' thing. And I still think this is the best Jaguar forum and we should all be quite proud of what has been achieved so far.
So far? Yes, get stuck in! This is
your
forum, it is the key to a vast amount of knowledge, and the key to your enjoyment of you Jaguar and the Jaguar marque.
(Of course, if you also have a Jensen, you know where to go. . .)
Isn't that right, Alan?

I think a lot of people post about a specific problem they are having with their Jag, get a warm welcome and an answer or at least advice and guidence.
Once their problem is resolved they will disappear again only to reappear possibly under a completely different username because they have forgotton the first once next time they have a problem!
That possibly explains the large number of inactive users registered on the forum

That's a very good point Jacqueline,
The member count of over 2500 means very little when there's only 20 or 30 regular forum posters.

Hi SV8, Thanks for taking the time for that post, because it echoes exactly what has always mattered to me. I've been here 7 years and was the original moderator (outside of Kelsey staff). It was my hope from the beginning that this Forum would be a friendly place (unlike some others), and that it would promote camaraderie between enthusiasts. I believe it would be hard to match the mix of usefulness with courteous dealings between members here.
The Forum has changed substantially over the years. There was originally a post numbers battle between the two biggest Bulletins early on and they were the XJS and XJ40 Bulletins. There was also a great deal more genuinely funny input provided by to 3 or 4 members who have now left us. Still, I entirely concur with your 'family' comparison and would say that I have seen that same thing said by posters two or three times over the years. I was always pleased to copy those posts to Matt Skelton!
An additional thought about the 'filtering' problem, is that there is a huge proliferation of small clubs catering for specific models within the Jaguar range. Without trying at all hard I can think of at least six, both up and down market. This 'specialisation' also has an adverse effect on the people who might otherwise post here.
I believe it's time to thin out the membership list again!?
With regard to the JEC, I believe that their membership is suffering a bit, though they are in my view the better of the two main clubs. Their Forum is another matter. I won't go near it as I found it to be a nightmare of user unfriendliness. The format chosen by the original co-ordinator Norman Hicks was to set it up with Bulletins which echoed the headings in the workshop manuals!!!! I feel sure that it's complexity has caused it problems.
I like it here.
Final thing, for those that don't subscribe to the JWM Magazine is that we have just lost our Forum Champion in the form of Matt Skelton, Magazine Editor. He has been our great supporter over the years, always acting positively when issues were raised by me. He has deservedly found a new role with Jaguar Cars. Positively, our publisher Phil Weeden is stepping in to fill the gap. I have his email address!Cheers, apax.

I see Forum membership has now broken the 4,000 barrier, about 1500 new members in the last couple of months... a shame none of them seem to post !Are these new members Jag owners or just browsing ? I'd like to think ownership is reaching far and wide, but even if you don't own a Jaguar, you are very welcome on the Forum, let us know how you feel about Jaguars...all welcome.
Best wishes Brian

The problem is Brian, that the vasy majority of these '1500 new members' are spammers, mostly 'bots' (scripts that automatically sign up).
If you go to the 'members' pages, you will see that all recent members are spammers, for page after page, after page. . ..
Without appearing to criticise (but I will anyway) the forum admin(s) should be clearing out all these spammers from the membership list. Simple housekeeping. This is not being done.
I do sympathise for Roly as he seems to be the only moderator trying to plug the holes (I understand Apax is hors de combat) and one man cannot be expected to do all this himself.
So where are the admins. Come on, show yourselves!

Certainly no criticism of you Roly! I fully understand just how much a 'mod' can do.
That's why I'm having a go at the 'admins'. Or is there just one 'admin'? Whoever it is,
they are not doing their job!
Those bogus registrations should be cleaned out, because all their bullshit email addresses and their predatory websites are being sucked up by the search engines and spreading even further.
It really is a poor show. So come on Mr Admin, rise to the challenge! Show yourself!

Being a recent member of this forum I would make the following comments of my experiences to date on this forum (compared to other car forums where I have been a member for a number of years)
There is no way to welcome new members - usual on most internet forums. "Newbies" need to feel wanted and loved
Technical assistance appears limited compared to others - maybe because "Jaguar" encompasses many models.
Absence of technical guru usually found and revered on other car forums, who can answer most technical issues.
Seems to be an absence of real humour and friendliness - people must realise that quite often "humourous" comments made in print may well offend, compare to the same comments made "face to face" - I've already experenced this on this forum.
Whilst you have an area for "News, Gossip and General Chat" quite often other forums cater for more "extreme" humour - jokes - a real ice breaker
Just a few of my personal observations

Dbug, Not to trivialize your obsewrvations, and I'm sure the admins/mods are grateful for construction input but, well, "it is what it is"
And that's not a criticism or even a slight.
Long ago I learned that each forum develops it's own personality, has it's own strengths and weaknesses, etc. It took years to develop and is hard to change
I like this one well enough to check in every day even though I don't post very often.
Cheers

Since Matt Skelton the JWM editor left the forum last year..i have had no contact with the new editor and i assume the new man in control of the forum. I have emailed various people on the magazine about forum and members problems but I have had no reply.
I assume we have been forgotten about.

A dying forum??
Shame really.
Perhaps you need to make a nuisance of yourself with JWM until you get a positive response and not take the "subservient " stance (refering to them as "the powers that be") - either JWM support a forum in their name or it just expires slowly.

Sometimes all it takes is a simple thank you to feel acknowledged. That can make a load of difference.
Recall when I joined this forum some years ago now someone congratulated me for reviving a number of threads I had commented on.
Got my 100 posts or whatever it was within a month
All this from someone techicnally inept who just happened to lust after a XJS on a garage forecourt oneday and who has been paying the repair bills ever since!

Lets stick to the Forum and not God....
Although if
GOD
I wasn't rebuilding the threads on here "everyday"then the church doors would all be N/A on them.
That problem is still here and seems to happen if someone posts and then reposts and alteres their post.

Steadily being cleared out. Hopefully in a couple of days the membership figure will reflect genuine members. Although the way the board has been of late, there's only a handful of 'regular' posters.
Hopefully we can turn that around in coming weeks.

I hope so too, things have been very slow of late, lets see if we can get some interest going again.

My research is showing that this may be a server space issue. Perhaps backups being stored on the same server.
Things were OK until Saturday evening when it has all started up again. So although I keep 'rebuilding' the message index (not a chore, it's only one click!) these pesky N/A messages are appearing regularly.
The threads and posts are still in each section though, so don't let it put you off using the forum.
I will get it sorted by hook or by crook (eventually). . .

All good today! Well done, it was a pain having to open every section to see if any new postings, much better.

I "think" we're getting there Brian, the upset last weekend was a monster!
But there's a lot goes on behind the scenes that are not visible to the forum in general. We are literally being attacked every few minutes by bogus registrations. Changes that I have implemented mean that these registrations are not validated (thus they do not actually become proper members) unless I approve them.
But that means all these registrations need to be checked. If they are obvious spammer-type user names then I just delete them, and so far this is working.
Other forums I have locked down and thus new registrations have to email the admin to become members but I am leaving this one open to try and encourage genuine new registrations.
I feel we have the potential to (once again) turn this into a very friendly and useful resource for Jaguar owners and enthusiasts.
So, onwards and upwards!
