V12 radiators compared to straight six
22.11.2011 at 11:57:43
Hello, I am sorting out the cooling system on my XJ6 series 1 which is fitted with a Ford 302ci V8 and it currently boils over at the first opportunity when coming to a stop. I will of course check the thermostat and give the system a proper clean, but I am pretty sure that the radiator simply does not have the capacity to cool enough water.
Before having a new radiator specifically made for the car, I was wondering if a V12 would fit and if the connection for the hoses are in the same place as a 6 cylinder radiator. I presume the V12 radiator has a bigger volume. I do not need a radiator with a built in cooler for the automatic transmission as my car has one fitted seperately.
Can someone please tell me if the V12 radiator is the way to go?
Many thanks,
Philippe

My comments refer to XJS and Ser III V12 radiators but I'm reasonably sure all are the same in principle....
The V12 radiator has two upper hose connections and the core itself is partially segregated by an internal baffle. In essence, it's almost like two radiators in one, with coolant finally being blended together at the bottom where there's a conventional single hose.
A radiator shop could modify the radiator or you could fabricate some sort of "Y" arrangement for the upper hoses.
I'm not sure if it's worth the effort and expense. The radiators were barely adequate for 5.3 litres of V12. Not sure one would do much better on 5.0 litres of V8.
I'd try to find an aluminum radiator.
Not sure what's available to you but some guys in the 'States have been using aluminum radiators from Mustang V8s, circa 1997-2004.
Cheers

Why not get it refurbished? had mine done earlier in the year and from memory it cost somewhere in the region of £200 for the XJS which had sprung a leak in the smaller section of the radiator.
