1973 Daimler series 1 XJ6 4.2 rebuild.....
30.11.2011 at 20:50:12
Hi everyone, new guy here,
Didn't know where to start with anything so thought I'd begin with a brief description of my XJ6 and where we're at with it.
I originally bought the car from a couple of dodgy fellas, brothers, in Lichfield, Burton-on-Trent, about 6 years ago. Car then went to a friend of mine in Eastbourne, Chris Steel, where a number of parts from a donor (and unfortunately un-recoverable) Mk10 made their way over to the Daimler. In no particular order they were; Power-Lok diff, rebuilt 4.2 engine with a gas flowed and ported head previously prepared at Harry Weslake's premises, 3 x HD8's, manual 4 speed with o/d box, series III brakes/calipers, oil cooler... I then added a complete performance S/S exhaust system from AJ6 Engineering, Carb trumpets and Pipercross socks from Guy Broad.... and that's about it. Got the car back from Chris and was blown away by the performance - oh yea, forgot to add, Chris let me have a front subframe with a Mk10 anti-roll bar which he told me(!) had been 'tweaked' by Tom Walkinshaw Racing. Don't really know what that means. But I have to say, the car turns in really sweet and hangs on, little understeer (perhaps grips a little too well....) and the backside is easily controlled on the throttle.
All in all she was great fun, seriously good fun, but the body and paintwork became tired. She'd begun to rot out in the usual areas (headlamps etc.) so off she went to Richard Brinklow at Hillarys Coachworks in Tunbridge Wells.
Car's been there a while, but the quality of the repair work has been second to none. A few new panels, bare metal, now primed and - as I write - waiting for a nice new shiny coat of Flag Metallic Blue later this week. Yea, I know, not a period factory spec colour but I've always loved, a) the colour itself, and b) the Ecurie Ecosse story, so it's a nod in David Murray's direction. I like to think he'd have approved.
No rear seats as yet (original squabs perished as a result of the usual water ingress through the rear screen seals), a slightly naff Corbeau sports/touring drivers seat and no carpets, underfelt, etc. but we're getting there.
I'll upload more pics when the car's back from Hillarys, but I just wanted to show any of you who are interested where we're at at the moment.
If any of you have thoughts, ideas or suggestions for further improvements (or where I can get some leather covered rear squabs, perferably in dark blue...!!) let me know. And if any of you know how to 'cure' the screen seal problems these cars so often suffered from I'd love to hear from you.
Cheers all.
PS also have a Mk.II, but I'll blog about that in the correct forum..!!
PPS was trying to post with some pics of the car, engine etc, but file sizes are too big. I'll get on and try to resize them!

Just thought I'd add a few more pics having stopped off at Hillarys today.
Paint's gone on and I have to say it looks fantastic. I've seen Flag Metallic Blue on D-Types, MkII's and E-Types, but never on a series 1. So, while I've always loved the colour I didn't know how it was going to look on such a large car.
There's work yet to be done - still needs polishing for a start - but I'm more than happy with the overall result. The fluorescents don't do the colour justice, of course, but once the car's polished and outside in the daylight I'm sure I'll be even more impressed.
Once the cars finally finished - paintwise - I'll get some more pics and post, if anyone's interested.

Welcome on board! Not normally a fan of dark blue but that metallic is nice. BTW, as a man once told me on here years ago 'You post it, we'll read it!'. Cheers, apax.
