V8 Auto Gearbox
20.12.2011 at 17:34:41

Hi guys, our V8 has the common problem of the banging gearbox when placed into drive from park. It does not do it every time but tends to do it when sloping downhill.

About a year ago, one of the technician's at our place managed to top the box up with fluid, but with great difficulty as a sealed unit.

It now needs topping up again, does anybody is there an easier way of topping up the gearbox fluid?

If not, I think a re-con gearbox might be needed  Embarrassed

Thanks guys.

It might have been the "technician" that has stuffed up your gearbox.

Did he have all the necessary equipment, brought everything up to temperature and followed the set procedure exactly? What makes you think it needs topped up again?

He didn't overfill it did he?

If he did, then yes, recon gearbox required.

Technician is a Jaguar Mastertech. Had no problems with it, was done over a year ago. Just wondering if there is an easier way of topping it up now than what he did?

Perhaps the sloping down hill bit gives a clue ??Other than that have no idea.

Spot on. The hint was in the first post.

Just wondered if its anything to do with the gearbox specifically or just a sum of backlash / slackness in the entire drivetrain. This slackness will be a a maxmum when taking up drive from parking facing downhill.
Cheers

Just an afterthought - i have never known an autobox damaged by overfilling. Back in the old DII fluid days you could get a bit of funny drive, poor changes due to fluid foaming but that was about it

Are you in the habit of setting the parking brake first and then shifting to "Park"? If not, give it a try and see if the banging symptom suddenly disappears

FWIW, my experience (which does not include the specific transmission in question) is that the transmission must be grossly overfilled to cause damage. A quart or two isn't enough to cause a problem.

But surely the critical point will vary from transmission to transmission.

If damage occurs I think it'll be the foaming that does it. Foam doesn't flow !
