v12 water in fue probleml
21.12.2011 at 22:07:36

hi all
i have this ongoing problem with my 1989 xj12 s3 with water getting in to the tanks ,it had both new fuel tanks ,return valves, change over valve ,pump, fuel filter, injector seals ,filler to tank gaskets new filler seals and all fuel lines are ok
I can drain the tank and fill with new fresh fuel and the car drives like a dream but but after a heavy rain it always seems to mess about holding back and runs like a old dog and when fuel is looked at loads of water in it again. has any old got any ideas what to try next
thank you

I'm a bit foggy on this....it's been years since I had a Ser III...but I think each filler neck cavity in the body has a drain hole and hose. If the drains are clogged the water could pool up and overcome the filler cap seals.

I know you have new seals, but...... <shrug>....well, that's the only thing I can think of.

Cheers

In addition to the drain hose that Doug mentions, there's an almost miscroscopic vent hole which connects to a small hose that runs forward out of the filler recess.  If this hose is damaged underneath, which can be difficult to see, the tank can suck water in from the recess.

There's a plenum under the rear parcel shelf, this has rubber drains that route into the rear wing.  If the hoses there are mis connected it is conceivable that water could get into the fuel tank, although I don't think it's ever been reported...

I would also suspect the filler to tank seal. If the tank is ever so slightly maladjusted it is conceivable that water gets in that way. If the tank neck is not level with the bottom of the filler, or filler neck and tank are a bit off centre in relation to each other it could happen. I would also check the O-rings between the tank and filler neck for damage during fitting. (I assume you fitted new O-rings of the right X-section?  Wink  ). I would drain and refill, then just before going out for a drive in the rain cover the filler lids and recess by taping over the whole lot (but use tape that comes off fairly easily and peel it off immediately after the trip).

If it still fills with water I would check the breather arrangement to ensure that is hasn't been connected to the recess drain however unlikely that sounds.  Roll Eyes
