Hello
Having sold my XJ (x300) last year, I'm looking to get back into Jag ownership, and am considering an s-type.
I've seen a nice 1 owner '04 s-type (2.5 v6) with 107k miles, which I will look at next week.
Could someone advise on the model changes as I'm a bit confused. I know the dashboard changed in 2002 and then there was another change in 2005 when the rear lights changed. I don't want the early dash model, but were the changes in 2005 so significant that it is worth holding out for the latest model? Were the most major changes in 2002 or 2005? I understand that the early models can be unreliable , but the later models had most of the problems ironed out of them - is that correct?

Hi Alpine.
In 2002 the S-Type had a small facelift. Main way of telling is - different wing mirrors (no rounded instead of square), the grille is all one piece instead of having the Jaguar logo on the bonnet, it is all in one piece. The dash changed completely.
There was another facelift in 2007, although from memory only new backlights, interior remained the same.

Hi alpine; whatever S Type you buy, you will be sorely disappointed comparing it to the X300.
I sold my X300 last year and foolishly bought a 99 S Type 4 litre V8. Apart from the car costing me a small fortune in parts , since last June the car doesn't have the same presence as an XJ6 - S Types look like Ford Mondeos - which is basically what they are
If you want a diesel why not go for a 2.7 -350, a Jag that looks like a Jag.
Avoid S Types they suck
- from a reluctant S -Type owner

The S Type is based on some Lincoln, it's the X Type that has bits of the Mondeo on it and very good they are too
I think you have been unlucky with yours Archie, if you'd have got a good one you'd have been far happier, ask Super Trev.

i like jaguar stypes i had 99 3litre v6 auto for a couple of years it was really good i sold it on with 208000 miles on clock .dont get a manual box and dont bother with 2.5 v6 in poverty spec .as for the x type im not a massive fan its basically a mondeo as it shares 90 % of its parts but they are a cheap way to get a slighty better car then a mondeo.

That's rubbish, the petrol X-Type shares 17% of its parts with the Mondeo, thats some of the floor pan, the engine block, discs, pads, capliers and some suspension parts. Plus it actually looks like a Jag and the interior was so good that the S-Type and X350 actually ended up copying it. Don't forget the S-Type is based on a run of the mill Lincoln chassis.

Latest fault
- a smell of oil through the air vents - cause head gasket failure - cost of gasket set £48 - cost of labour £400 two days work.
So I'm looking at another
£500
when you include VAT
great start to the year
A local garage has a tasty Series 3 4.2 only 66thou miles for £1500. I'm thinking of trying to work out a deal with the salesman !.

yes but sockets at least it was rear wheel drive like proper jags are and not front wheel drive /4 wheel drive .also they was not fitted with a mondeo gearbox .I work in the motor trade and i can say that there is more then 17% of shared parts ie gearbox chassis suspesion brakes and the tracter/desiel engine and interior parts. thats why they stoped making them as they was not that popular and cheapened the brand as they alot were sold in poverty spec with tracter engines and manual box not really what the jaguar brand needed.

Owned my S Type since December 2010 and it really is the best car that I've owned.
Mines just been routine serviced once, new air con pipe joint "O" ring seal and regas and last week a new DCCV as posted on this forum.
The car has never missed a beat or shown any fault codes, dodgy warning lights or anything. Passed the MOT with no problem or advisory, no oil or water leaks etc. All the electrics work as they should.
Always starts first time and purr-rrs along. I've not put any new tyres, brake pads or discs on either, even though I do sometimes drive it fast and would probably outbrake the formula one world champion Sebatian Vettel in any same model two cars i'm sure.
Cost me £320 to insure fully comp with protected no claims and the road tax is acceptable ( even though we all moan about motoring costs, me included ) @ £210 per year.

M80, there's more to a proper Jag than just real wheel drive, what about the engines, there's some would argue a real Jag has to have a six cylinder inline engine and not a V8
There's others who say a proper Jag has to have been designed while William Lyons was around (that's my opinion too), it's all down to personal opinion but what isn't an opinion is the fact that Jaguar and a lot of independants say the X-Type shares around 17% of its parts with Ford (some even say as low as 15%).
The Diesels share more because the engine and box are pure Ford with no mods. The petrol manual gearbox is adapted from the Ford MTX75 but is not a direct replacement and the auto is a Jatco unit. I don't think Jaguar have ever made their own gearboxes, I think the X308 like yours has a ZF box made in Germany, how terribly English
Jaguar have always made poverty spec cars, there was the XJ40 with 2.9 litre engines in the 80s and 90s, tweed seats, manual box, wheel trims and the same for the gorgeous Series 3 too.

I don't want to get into the "what make a
real
Jaguar" debate, but.....
..... I will say that the straight six in my XJR is important to me. "Straight six" and "Jaguar" just naturally go together, IMHO.
Time moves and there's nothing we can do to stop it....but an occassional fond nod towards tradition seems appropriate with Jags.

I do believe that the dizzy cap and rotor arm does work the V12 as two engines.
