Bit surprised to see rust on bottom door edge - not usual on XJ40s. Check the seam, seam sealer and drain holes on the inside of the door.
From the photo it looks as if some of the black underseal has gingerish bits as if rust is starting. If this is the case brushing some dinitrol on may help.
Something worth doing that is fairly easy is to remove the door kicking plates and spray plenty of WD40 in at varius angles until it drips out of the sill drain holes.
You can do a better job of this by removing the seats and the strip of carpet that runs along the inside of the sills. You can then get at the inside of the sills through squared holes behind the wiring, these wll be taped or rubber plugged. You can then spay in WD 40 or Dinitrol aerosol.
Cheers

Thanks for the advice about how to get the sills protected from inside. That is now on my to do list...  Cool
My rust does (as I see it...) come from the outside (stone chips and other damage). That is a lot better than when it comes from the inside. I do not think the black part of the sills has rust, but I will soon get info from the garage, they should have looked on it this afternoon

Rust on the bottom door edge ??
Please look at the photo again. I do not see it ??  Wink Grin

Rust on the door bottom edge? I noticed you had sandblasted right along, maybe just a shade above the bottom edge and it still seams as if there is some darkish shading in the sand blasted area (rust?)

I have sandblasted the lover edge of the wing, and I have sandblasted the sill under the door, but not the door itself.
Maybe I just don't understand what you mean, english is not my native language...  Cheesy

No its not your english, its me not looking at the photo properly. - Where you have blasted is the bottom edge of the wing when I have taken time to look again. For some I though I was loking at the rear nearside of the car not the offside front. Roll Eyes

Just to add to the ignition question of advance, on my X300 i have an advance bracket 5 degree's, i have contacted the maker of said bracket and he advises that an XJ40 Aj6 engine could run the same bracket with no ill effects, his reason is that all AJ6 egines have hard seats right from the start of production and at present he has an engine running with 7 degree's of extra advance in a race car, Andy Stodart is his name i think. He stated even if i were unsure about the 5 degree's he would be happy to make a bracket with less advance for me if i wanted.

Hi Mick

I'm aware that this bracket exists. The engine management must rely solely on the input from this sensor to decide the angular position of the crankshaft, since it works.
Does the AJ6 engine have knock sensors to avoid pinking from too much advancing of the timing ?

None on the AJ6 engine but I'm not sure that would be an issue. Best talk to Andy.

So, now I have lifted carpets and sprayed LH panel inside. And floor reinforments as well. Nice rubber plugs in BRG colour...   Cheesy

Next up: New coil, rotor/cap and leads (whiler I wait for you to tell me how to get the seat motor out...)

And done, except from the non original leads  Angry
Plug end caps are not long enough to reach the top edge of the cam cover and the original rubber plugs sealing the plugs holes are then not sealing anything. And they are also way too long.
I guess I will have to get me a set of originals to become happy  Smiley
