Titter Ye Not!
In the 80's I worked for a taxi firm who had a fleet of nearly new Diesel Vauxhall Cavaliers and a couple of Lada saloons. In the mids of winter it was not unusual for one of the Ladas to be called out to tow start a Vauxhall!

I've always liked the
Niva 4X4
Fith Gear once drove one for several miles over a green lane and the humble Lada made it whilst the film crew 4X4 was bogged down - best not mention the make on this forum  Wink

You can buy a brand new Niva for 11 Grand....astonishing value, another 500 quid gets you LPG.
If I had 11 grand and was after another 4X4 I would definitely consider the humble Niva  Smiley

Smiley Wink Cheesy Grin Hi again Everyone,

Please don't laugh but between 1978 and 1982 I used to work as a semi-skilled motor mechanic, breakdown recovery driver for a Lada main agent and I used to service Lada's and Moskovitch cars almost every day and could still service one of these Model-year cars with my eyes closed.

Mine was a T reg 1500 cc FSO but I never drove it as hadnt passed my test and quickly flatened the battery due to no one bothing to explain to me the concept of a manual choke being needed in November.

Sadly it did not long survive the photo due to my friend who had it after me ripping out the sump on some raised manhole covers going over some roadworks.

It cost me £350 from a mate of my brothers and was in pretty good condition for a 10 year old car.

As regards Wartburgs my brother bought one from his mates dad when he was about 16 and promptly gave it to our Dad who drove it about for a couple of years with, so far as I am aware no particular issues but that is probably the only Wartburg I have ever known or had any dealings with.

A friend had a Moskovitch before I knew them and think when I did know them it was holed up in their garage. Would not be entirely suprised if it was still there to be truthful  Smiley  Wink

Blimey Jaq, you and your friends have had some....unusal vehicles, and if you paid £350 for a 10 yr old Russian heap of cr*p, I don,t think they were much of a friend. Most Wartburgs went to the scrap heap B4 4th birthday, two stroke engine gave up the ghost, Lada Riva and pre Riva built like brick sh*t houses, knock down walls...the Riva was actually a very good 4x4, constant fwd + diff locks, lack of power in the engine dept spoilt the fun, but have driven a 2lt pinto engined Niva much better, all in all the Russian/Eastern block of the 70/80's were rubbish, the only one with any kudos was the Skoda Rapide imho.

The FSO was actually perfect in all respects. In hindsight probably should have resisted presure and kept it!

Wartburg cost brother £25 and was soon offered to Dad. Dads mate came and trailered it away but it did end up used by dad for probably at least a couple of years as was bigger than the Fiat 126 he had.

Dads mate was called Richard who lived at Binfield Heath, near Henley and had a neighbour called Lord Phillimore. Said Lord didnt like the fact Richard kept pigs and had converted his 7ft deep swimming pool into a duck pond (nearly drowned 3 times in one afternoon in the pool once) and Lord Phillimore eventually offered Richard 1 million to move at least 60 miles away with a promise never to come back.

Richard bought a farm near Calne in Wiltshire and paid someone to farm some of his land for him. All parties were happy, though I believe Lord Phillimore now dead. Lot of money a million quid in the 80's  Grin
