You'd be great at writing 'clues' for cryptic crosswords Roly!
But here's my informative post for the day:
Jaguars are still in production!
(As far as I know. . .)

Are they really jaguars???
The V8 jags if that is what they are.. are so poor with the engines.... seems jaguar lost the plot after the V12 aj6 and the xk engine... i am just glad I still have a
real
Jaguar.
Are you glad
that i am glad?

Roly, the XK engines had their problems, timing chains and bad oil pressure, the 3.2 and 4.0 ltr X300 seems to be the best engine so far IMHO, the V8 had problems, but they seem sorted now, took far too long and caused Jaguar to lose many sales on the way, hopefully all in the past.

you will find even so called bullet proof engines have there own problems take toyotas d4d engine prone to pumps failing same as ford diesal pumps . jaguar went to v8s as the xk unit was getting long in the tooth and a bit old .

My X308 is every bit as much a Jaguar as any of your cars Roly.
And the engine is the best part.
Most of your posts are of the problems you are having with your cars' engines!
Keep taking the tablets old chap.

All mine have been to the moon and back mileage wise..... guess they were due to get a "touch of the Apollo 13's".. but these jag V8's seemed to have had problems right from lift off.
still taking the tablets

I had a timing chain go on my previous AJ6 4.0L. Still ended up needing a replacement head.
Happy days

All engines are a compromise - make them truly bullet proof and they will be too heavy and consume too much fuel.
The original Jag V8 was pretty well spot on. Nikasil bores had proven far superior to steel or cast iron over many years so jag was right to use them. It was just an unfortunate combination of high sulpur fuel and short Journeys that did the damage, BMW got caught out as well.
The cam chain failings were a design mistake and its difficult to understand how Jag got this wrong. The problems were known and many manufacturers had come up with solutions such as duplex or inverted tooth chains or inserting a gear into the cam drive.
Cheers
