Rear Diff - Heeeeeeeeeelp
28.02.2012 at 12:23:49
I’ve decided to bite the bullet and replace the diff on my car as it's getting to be a bit noisey. It doesn’t look like a major job albeit I don’t possess sufficiently high axle stands or a trolley jack with sufficient lift. So I thought I’d do the sums and find out how much it would cost the lazy way.
I tracked down a firm in Suffolk who would recon my diff for £430 which seemed reasonable. However my local friendly Independent Jaguar Specialist wanted £750 to drop the cage and put it back. Blimey.
Has anyone else done this on an outboard set up recently using just the ordinary home garage equipment and how did you get on? Any thoughts suggestions or otherwise greatly appreciated.
Happy Days
Nick

Hi Nick,
I did it last year to get the inboard disc setup out and the new cage, diff & outboard discs in on my Coupe.
Just used trolley jack and axle stands with some wood blocks. I can't believe how much they want to drop the cage, it is relatively easy
The hardest part was getting the handbrake cables off!
I say give it a go if you think you are up to it, got mine out and in again in an evening starting about 6pm and finishing 9ish including stops for cuppa's.
Good luck.
P.S. did their quote include fitting the cage with the new diff and reattacinh driveshafts?
Cheers
Mark

Never done this but understand rear disks is a rear subframe out jobbie
Fortunately mine when it boiled down to it only needed new rear pads so major cost was averted for which I was highly grateful but possibly had the car been doing more miles the disks would have been replaced
Good luck from a poor defenceless female technophobe who places her hopes in the hands of trusted experts
