XJ-S 3.6 Manual
12.03.2012 at 18:30:25

Hello!

I just purchased my second Jaguar. It is a 1986 model 3.6 liter XJ-S with factory manual transmission. I am also very fortunate, as I live in the States, that the car was somehow imported without the awful Federal style bumpers.

The car is completely original, 70K miles on the clock. Rhodium silver with black leather interior. The only thing I want to change is the pepperpot wheels.

My first choice for wheels is the Jaguar OEM 8x16 forged alloy lattice but I heard that they clash with the XJ-S suspension so it's better to go for the 7x16 variant.

Does anyone have any advice on this, as to which option is better?

The most common would be the 15x6.5 lattice....used on many XJSs.

AFAIK the 15x7 and 15x8 lattice were actually XJ40 wheels...with the 16x8 being especially rare.

The 17x8 XJR/6 wheels fit well on the XJS so I'm inclined to the think the 16x8 would be OK....if you can find a set and if the offset is similar.

Others will chime in

Cheers

Thanks!

I am collecting information on this subject. This is how it goes so far:

There are 3 types of lattice wheels that were standard equipment by Jaguar. The first came out as the "Sports Kit" on the XJ-S and was a 6.5x15 wheel. These are the most common found today.

Then when Jaguar refurbished its product line to include the new 6.0 liter V12 on standard XJS, XJ6, XJ12, and Double Six models, there were two "Sports Lattice" wheel options:

1) 8x16 MMB6115AA (also referred to as "deep dish")
2) 7x16 MHB6115AA

It seems that the 7x16 was introduced to fit the XJS because  if one were to try and fit the 8x16's onto an XJS or XJ-S, one would have to add spacers so that the rims clear the steering track. I have yet to confirm if wheel arch clearance then becomes an issue when the steering is at full lock.

I'm hoping that there are others out there more knowledgeable than me who can straighten this out!

Sounds right to me, Art.

Just to add a tidbit, the XJS with the 15x6.5 Lattice  used spacers on the steering rack due to clearance problems at full lock with the 235/60 tires

Cheers

The above is suppose to read:

I found a discussion on the JCNA forum on this subject that may be of interest:

I also found a picture where a guy fitted 15's on the rear and 16's on the front just to compare - pretty cool that he did this comparison.
