I have always had discs & pads (shoes as well) from David Manners or British parts. Only about £25 a disk & £20 ish for a set of pads. Never had any problems with them. Usually Lucas, Mintex, GKN or some other well know make (I think GKN may be original Jag)
Cheers

My front discs and pads are from Manners or Barratt, also the cheap option. No problems at all, but I have lately paid more in freight to Denmark than I find reasonable, so I decided to go for another supplier this time, as brakeparts are heavy and therefore expensive to ship.

Total amount will probably be slightly higher, but with Brembo I expect to get pretty good stuff...  Cheesy

Leo,

Lucky you!   Grin

If the picture is exactly what you found when you first took it off, I guarantee that it has been off before and somebody cleaned it up!

No tricks, this is what I found. It does not look like there have been rust cleaned of, but there have been applied aluminium coloured grease/paste.

The owners before me were not DIY minded, and a normal garage would never spend time on cleaning stuff up to please the next guy, that happens to disassemble it.
The outside pad on right side had lost the lining, the remaning 3 pads had ca. 6mm left, but heavy rust between lining and backplate, so one lost the lining during disassembly...  Shocked

Only about 50% of the disc being swept...I would be looking at the caliper to see why.

Agree, I will have to find the cause. We have been using the car as daily driver for a loooong period w/o problems, but after getting the Panda it often stands unused for up to a week. Apparently not a good idea, allthough fuel bills now are smaller...

How much resistance is acceptable when pushing in the pistons ? Should I be able to push them by hand with the bleedscrew open ??
I just took things apart yesterday, I haven't tried push in pistons yet, the rain is pouring today...

Is it easy to get the piston out to clean and grease ? And not less important: Is it easy to assemble them again... ?
Edit: I can see in Haynes it's as easy as I expected...

LH caliper bellow had lifted off due to rust in the groove, but after cleaning it up it actually looks quite OK, so I will assemble them again with grooves cleaned for rust and well greased with blue Ate.

Caliper casting and rubbers are marked Ate, so I guess calipers have been replaced at a point ?

Well Leo, having gone thus far, I assume you have an o'haul kit, not expensive, and be sure to check the slider pins are free.

It appears that leo does alot of miles but not much maintenance.
How do handbrake shoes wear out? on a car that has rear disc brakes?
Maybe driving along with the handbrake on perhaps.
(Or badly adjusted) Undecided

I do not have a repair kit, and as xj40's are pretty rare here in DK, I will have to get one home from UK.
Rubbers looks perfectly fine to my eyes, so I will take the chance and assemble it again as it is.
It's not really a big job to take it apart and rebuild later should it leak.
Slider pins are perfectly fine  Smiley

Hi Geoff

My handbrake is OK, it was the pads, that were loosing their lining (or whatever the braking compound is called for pads...)

Regarding my maintenance scheme:
I change filters, plugs and fluids according to the book, and the rest of the car simply has been very reliable and therefore there has been no need to do anything...  Cheesy
I bought the car in 2005 and has done around 65.000 miles since. Repairs and mainteance in this period have been:
2006: Windscreen washer pump changed
2008: Hardy disc changed
2010: Wheel bearings changed, , top front wishbone bushings changed, front brake disc + pads changed
2011: rear dampers and subframe bushings changed, exhaust changed. Exhaust manifolds refaced.
2012: front ving and sills rust repair + paint.

HELP...

How do I assemble my calipers again ?

As far as  can see, I have to mount the bellow in the housing before inserting the piston and then get the piston through the smaller-than-the-piston hole in the bellow. NOT EASY and therefore probably not the smart and correct way to do it...

I tried a few youtube videos, but they were not to much help as the boot/bellow was mounted in other ways...

Well, it helped to cry for help, now they are assembled  Grin
I ended up lifting the inner edge out using a small, round-ended allen key instead of trying to get my thick fingers in there...

Pleased to hear that you finally assembled the calipers - with copious amounts of clean brake fluid I trust?

I found the easiest way to reassemble them was to mount the caliper vertically in a vice, insert the inboard end of the dust cover in its groove in the caliper bore and then lower the piston through it ensuring that it entered the bore absolutely 'square' until it was past the caliper bore seal and then I could allow the piston to sink down until the outboard edge of the seal slotted in to its groove in the piston..

Still felt as if I needed three hands to do it though!  Grin
