Electric seat adjustment
14.03.2012 at 19:16:05

Hi all

In my car, the 'seat back switch' on the outside of the drivers seat is the non-return type, and the motor does therefore try to pull the seat back until I turn it off. Not a very intelligent design, but maybe something is wrong in my car ??

I drive with the seat fully to the back. I have not forgotten the switch often, but when it has happened I don't discover it until the smell of burnt electronic reaches my nose... Shocked

Now the motor off cause has given up. I can feel it still does something, but the seat does not move.
That would not be a big problem if not my wife is about 25 cm smaller than me...

So, I need a motor. I guess it should be easy to find from a scrapyard in UK, especially as it is for a LHD drivers seat.
I could buy the complete assembly, but I have to consider the postage costs.

Which motor is it I need from the below picture from the Jaguar Classic parts page ??

Leo,

Yes there is something wrong with your car.

If you have been using the 'Driver Entry' switch on the outboard side of the driver's seat to traverse the seat all of the way back before you get in to the car (and before you turn on the ignition BTW), it is supposed to have a limit switch to cut off the power as the seat reaches the end of its travel rearwards. Presumably the limit switch on your car has not been working.

The fore/aft motor is not identified separately in the parts catalogues but it is to part number JLM1729 (NLA from Jaguar now) and is the one with the Orange wire and the Pink wire leading to it on both the front seats so that is probably the easiest way of identifying it.

When you replace the motor if you can't get that limit switch to work, I suggest you use the normal fore & aft switch on the side of the centre console to move the seat but you will need the ignition on for that to work. At the same time, pull the Driver Entry  relay - the one in the green base under the ski-slope on the centre console to avoid burning out another motor!  Grin

Good morning guys  Smiley

Weekend started: Seat out of car. Surprisingly heavy and not so easy to get out, but out it is. I think I will pull the steering wheel upwards before mounting it again...

Looking at the photo below I would say the transversely, rearmost mounted motor must be the fore/aft ? Wiring is black/white though.

What do I to disassemble to get the motor out ? There must be some joint between the motor axles and the 2 small gearboxes ? Or maybe not...  Huh

Next thing: The cut-out switch, that does not work in my seat. Where to find it ??

And finally: To change the heat pad,how do I take the seat 'pillow' apart without destroying anything ?? Maybe it lifts of the seat base/frame without removing the seat base/frame from the car ?

It did as always help to ask...  Cheesy

Seat pad is of, super easy, 1 screw at front.

Wiring to the motor IS pink/orange BEFORE the plug...  Grin

Leo,

Just beat me to that reply!  Smiley

You have found the fore/aft motor - the one mounted transversely at the back of the seat frame, but beyond that I can't advise because I have never had to get 'down and dirty' with the seat mechanism.

My guess is that the seat travel 'limit switch' is part of the seat motor itself. It is not separately identified and is depicted in the circuit diagrams as being on the motor side of that 2-way Econoseal connector. Perhaps it is one of those 'torque' limit switches which cut the circuit when they feel restriction.

Thank Covkid  Smiley

So, the motor is now loosened, but construction dictates, that the 'driveshafts' are pulled out before the motor can be lifted out.

These 'driveshafts' are floating and will get out, if I remove the drive gears, but that part does not look easy to assemble again...  Huh

Driveshafts are flexible, but does not seem to be flexible enough to just be bend and twisted and pulled out.

My plan is to (for now) swop the motors on the front seats. A non-moving passengers seat is OK for a while. XJ12-rob from XJ40.com has a motor (and other stuff...) ready to send to me, then I will have something to do in one of the next weekends as well...

I found out how to do it: The motor is placed on a bracket, that can be unbolted, if you have very small fingers and torx tools, that will work at an angle.
I used some swearing instead and ended up with a drivers seat, that moves and a passengers seat ready to get a replacement motor. Not bad...  Cool
