DS420 Daimler Limo unusual water ways

I started to strip a DS420 engine (no 7MXXXX) and found it has different/unusual water ways to the usual 4.2 engine. Between the cylinders there is a slot running across the block joining the water ways. This is strange because there is only 1/8 inch of metal between the bores and the water ways. The head gasket has strips of alluminium that align with the slots on the block. Does any know if this block is used on any other jags/daimlers?
I'll take a piccy tomorrow and add.

Yes, that was the standard block introduced on the SIII XJ.

The slots were an attempt (largely successful) to stop the almost inevitable inter-cylinder cracks that occurred on the previous versions of 4.2 engines.
