What have I done now?!
24.03.2012 at 10:55:40

Morning all. Hoping someone can shed some light on a minor problem - just taken the dash out of the 420G and now can't start it... It was fine right up until the tacho and speedo came out, so presumably it's something to do with them? I've put the tacho back in but there's nothing on the starter button, and i was hoping to send the 2 dials off for a refurb whilst the dash was out for some tlc... Presumably it's just an earth somewhere but I can't work out where. Any ideas?!

Hi, do the ignition and/or oil warning lights come on ? Did you disconnect the battery before removing dash? if not have you blown a fuse? wire off starter push button ? is there any voltage at coil? Best of luck Brian Wink Shocked

Thanks for the pointers Brian, I seem to have tracked it down... turned out to be a case of POWA (Previous Owner's Wiring Abuse) - so many bits of rubbish hacked into the wiring that a bit of a sort out seems to have worked! Replacing insulating tape with solder and heat-shrink has restored power from the start button to the starter motor. Quite glad it happened actually as I might not have spotted the mess otherwise!

Here is a little tip that might be of use  if you need to start the car whilst the Rev counter is out . You can put a loop  in the snap connecter to supply power to the coil .

Good to hear your still working on her .

Alan .

When I look at some of the wiring mods on cars from the 60s & 70s you have to be amazed at some of the Heath Robinson approach to adding simple things like spot lamps or radio cassette players, I've seen 4 Lucas 7" spotlamps wired straight through, not a relay in sight, and the guy wonders why he keeps melting switches, then there was the Scotch Lok of the 80s caused more grief to alarm systems than you could shake a strick at !!...Luck has it that most cars come 'loaded' now so not much to fit, thank God.

All the best Brian

Ah yes, the joys of the scotch-lock... I found an ignition switched live that eventually made it to the stereo having changed colour no less than 3 times on the way! When I took the dash out I even found a hard-wired illumiated compass jammed behind the speedo that appears to be spliced directly into the headlight feed... Truly terrifying!

Good to hear from you too Alan, thanks for the tip! i reckon she'll be back on the road in a couple of months - passed her MOT not all that long ago ( for the first time in 4 years!) so it's just retrimming and tidying up left to do!
