XJ40 rear whine.Diff?
25.03.2012 at 17:05:25

My 1990 4 litre has had a bit of a whine now for a while..but seems to be getting worse now...I don't think it is rear wheel bearings.. but no doubt the diff...
Question... which part of the diff is the usual culprit?? what will happen.."if i let it develope"?..she is not worth spending a lot of money on now.
i have looked through some of the old threads but i cannot see what i am looking for.

Roly,

If the whine is constant with road speed, probably not noticeable until the car reaches 30 mph or more and then remains constant up through the speed range, simply varying in volume, then if the wheel bearings are good, it is either the diff output bearings (the easy one) or the diff carrier bearing (nasty!).

If the sound starts as soon as the car moves off and the tone changes depending upon whether you are accelerating or on the over-run, then suspect the pinion shaft bearings (also nasty!)

If the carrier bearings or the pinion bearings are the problem, you need the diff out for overhaul / replacement with an exchange unit - and that means dropping and dismantling the entire rear suspension.

Not a Sunday afternoon job!

Best to drain the diff oil and check for metallic debris in the oil or on the magnetic drain plug. If you find any, it will not get any better and you either live with it or get it replaced.

You can check for excessive end-play in the diff output shaft bearings by sticking your fingers between the output flange and the diff housing while someone waggles the rear wheel top and bottom.

3 to 6 thou is normal. Above that, replace the output shafts on exchange with ones with new bearings and seals.

Roly,

Yes, Daimlers of that year came with LSD as standard fit.

The original diff oil was Shell Spirax Super 90 but that has not been available for a few years.  I believe this stuff is the recommended alternative :-

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-69330-shell-thermally-stable-super-90-premium-qualit...

BTW, if you are doing it yourself, you need 2.1 litres in the diff, but DO make sure that you can remove the fill/level plug BEFORE you remove the drain plug  Wink

Well i got Rembrant to jack up the rear of my car today so I could listen to the rear wheels going round... my garage had told me "that the rear wheel bearings were fine"!....this was about 100 miles ago.. for MOT.... well i grabbed hold of the n/s rear tyre and i could waggle the wheel in all 4 compass directions.I suppose about a half an inch either way so an inch in total from the edge of the tyres..

i hope this is the whine!
I asked said son too look underneath whislt i was rocking the tyre... Sad even he reckons its the wheel bearing!!

Roly,

Certainly sounds like it. If you can rock the wheel in the horizontal plane _and_ the vertical plane then it is certainly the wheel bearing.

If in the vertical plane _only_ then it is the output shaft bearings and/or the U/Js.

Lower fulcrum bearing?

Lower fulcrum bearing would cause the movement but I would not have thought it would cause a whine.
Just worth a check whilst you have the car up.

Cheers
