Help with a couple of XJ40 issues
03.04.2012 at 21:29:39
Hi Folks,
Bought myself a 94 XJ6 GOLD, just to use for a few months until I find the perfect XJS.
Engine and body are fantastic, paint's not great but can't complain.
Couple of issues though, the indicator switch was dodgy so I bought a new one but I cannot for the life of me work out how to get the old one out? Can anyone help with this?
Secondly, the clock and radio were working fine when I picked it up, both have now hit the dust. Clock just resets everytime I start the ignition, and the radio (a new Kenwood) just won't do anything.
When they both went the electrical fault light came on, VCM states FUSE 2, checked every fuse and all are fine. Assuming a relay?
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
Jon

What's wrong with the indicators? Will they not self-cancel?
Fortunately a kind gentleman on the J-L site has provided a set of pictures of the self-cancelling mechanism on a late XJ40 which may be of interest to you :-

Of course to get to that mechanism or the indicator stalk switch itself, you need to remove the steering wheel and on your car you have a driver-side air bag? If so, you will need to follow precisely the air bag disarming procedure before you touch the wheel.
If you do not have the factory service manual (contained in JDHT CD-Rom JHM1153) which details that procedure, PM me an e-mail address and I will forward an alternative instruction on how to do it.
Can't guess what is wrong with your clock and radio, but the starting point must be the left 'A' post fuse box which either has a blown fuse, a missing fuse or a bad solder joint behind a fuse socket which is causing that 'Circuit 2' fuse failure warning. Ensure you check the fuses electrically as well as visually, just to be certain that the fuses are ALL good.
Pay particular attention to fuse A5 in that left fuse box - it serves many things including the radio and the clock.

Circuit 2 fuse failure warning - caused by dry joints. These need testing under load with soewhere between 1 and 3, 21 watt bulbs or something of similar wattage rating. Juat testing with an ohm meter does not always pick up the lack of continuity.
Cheers

Thanks for the help guys,
the stalk itself is physically broken, I have a new one so it's just the pain of fitting it.
I'll check for dry joints, i checked all the fuses with a circuit tester but I'll look further.
Thanks again,
JC
