Lucas fused distribution block...
04.04.2012 at 18:22:10

... does such a thing exist? I've decided it's about time the old girl had a couple of relays on the headlights for all the obvious reasons (being able to see at night being the main one), but I'm hoping to be able to use some period-ish parts instead of the ghastly flashy things that ICE companies offer. I don't think I will find a period relay holder, (as they didn't bother with relays, certainly not the modern type), but I was hoping I might be able to find some sort of fused distribution block - ideally with one input and 3 or 4 fused outputs, allowing me to run one heavy duty wire to block from the alternator and then run a fused feed to each relay.

Has anybody found anything that might do the job in the Lucas back catalogue?

I know it's probably heresy to start mixing and matching parts, but I can't bring myself to install anything flashy and modern, even under the bonnet...

Hi Fingers ,
sorry I cannot answer your question of a fused distribution block . The mixing of fused feeds to relays seems a  little pointless to me ? but that said I am no expert in these matters .

A simple way for your head lights is to split the load from side to side by installing an extra lucas fuse block , this will also give you spare fused terminals to use .

Just my idea and keeps the car behind the dash looking original to a point .

All the best

Alan .

Hi Alan

i'm afraid I'd have to disagree with fuses on relays being pointless! The relay is simply a switch, not a circuit protector, so I'd always put a fuse in the headlight circuit regardless of how it is switched - I'm getting worried about your foglights now!

Thanks for the tip - I think I may be able to use a Lucas fuse block with some bridging terminals on one side with any luck , I'll just have to hide the relays under the bonnet somewhere (possibly where the soon-to-be-redundant alternator relay lives).

It's nice to be worrying about headlight wiring after 4 years of welding and rebuilding! I still think there's a market for a bakelite fuse and relay holder though...

Well that will make for a good disscussion when we meet up .

Will the car be out on the road this year and if so do you fancy the Prescott meeting , would be nice to see you and the car after all these years .

I have seen most all of the "starships" currently on the road in southern England , it would be refreshing to see a new one .

All the best

After around 4 years of hoping to make it to the Prescott meet it might actually happen this year Alan! When is it? The old girl does't have much of an interior at the moment, but she does have an MOT, and assuming I can get the wood back at somepoint to put the instruments back in, I reckon we can make it even if it's as a 'work in progress' (and on the condition nobody comments on her paintwork...)

We really are on the final straight at the moment - although I think the leather may have to wait - so give me a date to aim for and I'll do my best!
