91 XJS V12 WARNING LIGHT
04.04.2012 at 20:32:41

Hi all

Need a bit of guidance.  Have a 91 V12 xjs and was out tonight on dual carriageway  - all dials looking good and everything running nicely.   for a brief moment a red warning light came on that i think said temp exc or temp exch?  i dont have a manual and could not locate what this meant online?

the light went straight off and i drove home slowly

also when i move the heater arm over to hot there is a stranging clicking noise coming from behind one of the dashboard centre vents like a channel has got stuck it goes off as soon as i swing the control back to cold?

any help be really appreciated

You can get the temperature warning light flicking on occassionally if you don't have the system fully bled.

Without knowing conclusively which light came on it's hard to say what the problem might be.  If it's the light for coolant temperature the air-pocket-in-the-cooling-system is a plausible explanation....although my experience with V12s is that air pockets also bring swings on the temperature gauge.

Some cars...Japan-market only, I think....had an exhaust temperature warning lsystem....with a warning lamp that probably reads "Temp Exh" or similar.  This might go along with your "temp exc" or "temp exch" recollection. <shrug>

I suspect that one of the flap control motors/actuators is fighting against a sticky flap...causing a ratcheting noise. Just a guess.

Cheers

Hey Doug

yes it is a japanese car so that does sound like it and yes that was the light word temp exch i think   and indeed no swings in the guage which made me question if it was just an electrical matter causing the light to flicker but your japanese finding does apply

its a bit weird having an exhaust temp light isnt it?  it only flashed to be fair and i drove another 5 miles and it didnt come on

yes your description of a ratcheting sound is right thats exactly how it sounds

thanks again
matt
