I would actually like to know if any off the shelf sound system would fit in an XJS. My one died a death ages ago or at least tape player worked intermittently till about a year ago but radio never has!

Will do but not high on my list of priorities right now. Been like it ages and in all probability I will sell the car before I get round to thinking about the sound system

The speakers in the doors are about 5.5" not the standard 5.25". You can make the 5.25 fit by making a gasket type arrangent of a stiff foam or similar around the top of the speaker, which is what I did, to seal the gaps. You will also need to drill more holes and fit the speaker with self tapping screws.
Jacqueline AFAIK a standard head unit should fit but only after modifying the fascia. See
