S type V8 sticking in Park

The S has recently started sticking in Park and it takes a good tug of the selector to free it
I rarely use the car now as I have a little Jeep Cherokee 2.5 as my daily driver. The S only gets used once a week to the local supermarket 5 miles away.
The Jag is currently for sale so I would like to try and sort this out, is it merely lack of use - or something more serious

Are you getting a click when you put your foot on the brake pedal?
That is the solenoid that stops the gearlever moving out of park.
This is the first thing to check.

I've not noticed a click. it sticks when I maneuver the car in my driveway - moving from drive to reverse to park the car in the tight space as soon as I put it in park it locks up
On Friday I'm going for a 60 mile round trip on the motorway in the Jag,
hopefully
that will blow out the cobwebs !.

In an emergency you can undo the screw (Torx bit) in the gear surround and manually move the solenoid to release the gear lever.

I think the torx is only on the xj, not the s-type.
