Headlight conversion kits
11.04.2012 at 20:36:28
Right chaps, a question. There's obviously no shortage of headlight conversion kits out there for our 4 eyed beasties, what with every British car for 20 years having either 7 or 5/3/4 inch headlights, but there is a huge variation in price... I'm not after anything fancy, just an upgrade from the sealed beams to halogen bulbs would be nice - has anybody got any recommendations or had any bad experiences? I don't want to have to adapt anything if I can help it - as I believe that any upgrade should be removable where possible - and I'm already in the propcess of fitting relays to take the pressure off the ancient wiring, but the kits I have found seem to range from £30 to £200 a pair! And it's amazing how much cheaper the same lights get if you say they are for a triumph instead of a Jag... Has anybody dabbled in this area and found a winner?

Hi, When I rebuilt my MkII I fitted H4 lamps and bulbs, then when into the scrapyards and filled a bucket with H4 bulbs from other cars.
I have recently replaced the Lamps due to corrosion on the reflectors and bought them from SVC, google it, they supply parts for kit cars and so are very cheap but good. Its like going from glow worms to lights.

Hi Brian
Thanks for the tip - it was the huge variation in prices that confused me initially, but I think those 7" / 5.75" units are so common you don't necessarily have to pay the premium for having 'Jaguar' on the box! There's a good selection on SVC and Holden I have found, so I will have a go and let everyone know how it get on...

Again, just tidying up a loose end here in case anyone needs it in the future...
Contrary to what we seem to be told in the JEC magazine at the moment, you do not need to spend upwards of £100 for a halogen headlight kit! I spend about £50 for a new, boxed set from a chap who sells them on ebay for the XJ6 (happy to dig out the details if needed). They were made by Ring with proper domed glass lenses, fitted perfectly and I was very happy with them - the only thing to be aware of is that they have a hole for a pilot / sidelight bulb in the 7" lights which I chose not to use as it would have needed a bit of fiddling to get the bulb into the tight space.
I went the whole hog with relays and new harnesses - should anyone want any more info in the future I have popped it here for reference.

Thanks for the info, as well as your website tips. I just found it the other day, and printed them all out -- stored in my "yet to be done" file (or should I say "box")(actually, more the size of a "crate", and growing).

Glad to be of service Baloo! I must say I'm intrigued by your 420G 503ci - what has it got under the bonnet? Have you got any pictures?!

Well, we've got two 420Gs -- one with the 502ci Cadillac engine with all Delco accessories and Turbo400 auto trans, and one original 420G (except it has an Mk10 grill, and I have been adding on an AC system with 140amp one-wire alternator -- for the past year). Attached pics were taken about 4 years ago -- not much changed; maybe 2000 more miles, or less. It turns out that I can only post one pic at a time; here's the 502 engine.

Hahahaha! That's absolutely brilliant! Something tells me you're no longer on the same brakes as the rest of us though...
I Love it!

XJS steering rack and brakes front and rear and wire wheels, all stock inside and exterior, except for that (and ride height). The other 420G keeps its original mechanicals (both black).

Awww, that's lovely! I love the idea of the upgrade too! I briefly looked at putting an Audi S8 engine into mine and making it 4 wheel drive (back in the days when I could afford that sort of thing) but there was no way I'd ever get the gearbox and transmission in without quite a rebuild! I seem to remember MabJag has a 5.3v12 XJS powered 420G, which also looked fantastic!
