Cheers Brian, how wide  is the 90 degree bit. I can see several on that well known auction site but most look quite bulky. I did see a full kit with flexi drive and right angle adapter that looked fairly compact and also one that was compact but said was for cordless drill so not sure which way to go ?

Cheers

Well Mark, as one carrot cruncher to another.... looking at the photo, I don't think a welder will help, even with the manifold off! if the stud is broken a few mil into the head there is no way to get a decent weld between a washer or nut and the stud, the last one I did I bought a 90 degree angle chuck for my drill and managed to drill down the centre of broken stud and tap a new thread, this was not as easy as it sounds and took several shortened drill bits, loads of swearing and not a small amount of skin, but it did work in the end.Have acess to 4 poster and workshop if you need help .
  All the best Brian

Well at least you will be able to get a good kip mark.! Wink

Yes Roly, sounds like an upgrade from the one I usually use, might be too posh to sleep in  Grin

So today, following the work on the front suspension I decided to get the alignment checked......no problem with adjusting it  BUT a cursory glance at the nearside radius arm mount was a bit worrying.
Some movement in what looks like pretty dodgy previous repair  Sad the metal seems sound around some dodgy welding so hopefully not to big a repair job just a tidy up and reweld.

Two steps forward one step back.

Mark, here's a photo of the angle chuck that I used to drill out the broken stud on a V12 XJS, mine was on the rear manifold, nearside. I cut down the drill bits to 30 m/m to make more room for the chuck, getting to drill central was the hardest part.

So today's task was to sort out the iffy radius arm repair that had previously been done on the car, luckily the metal was all sound it was just a really poor weld that was allowing a bit of movement. So in less than an hour it was all sorted out and some underseal applied.  ( by an expert , definitely not me!)

Good result as this weekend I am at Donington on Saturday and then Brands Hatch on Sunday so will do lots of miles.
With that in mind I had the alignment checked again and the wheel balance, nothing to report but the front tyres were wearing on the inner edge (from previous use) so I swapped the front to rear to cure a tendency for the car to tramline.

All I need now is some nice weather to get the hood down.....Fat Chance based on the forecast.

While at the garage we started to make plans for the recommission and upgrade of my XJS Coupe, looks like a few months before work can be started on that but no rush, I have waited this long to make sure I get it done properly and don't get tempted to skimp on what is needed....Happy Days.

Cheers

I am happy to report that the car has just got me back from Silverstone having covered some 750 miles since Saturday (Donington Saturday, Brands Hatch Sunday and Silverstone today) and not missed a beat  Smiley

Shame about the weather although did get the hood down all the way to Donington via Northampton....but it was very cold and not a great drive as it was Motorway all the way from Northampton.

Car attracted some attention in the car park at McDonalds this afternoon with somebody getting out of his car to get a closer look....in the rain!!

Cheers

Well following my trip to Silverstone I am sad to report that the battery went flat overnight...it seems like the door unlock relay failed and kept tripping resulting in the flat battery.

I now need to find the relay, it sits in the side of the drivers footwell on the earlier cars.

Anybody have any idea where to get one?
I checked my 1988 Coupe and that has a different system so need one for a 1983 car.

Off to Silverstone again next weekend so more mile for the old girl.

Cheers

Re: Cabriolet Work - Latest Mods

Hi,

The latest mod is to fabricate and fit a cross brace to  the front of the car, I looked at the Jag one for a convertible and felt it looked very flimsy so had one made based on the type used on the Aston DB7. With his done my "Cabriolet" now has bracing in the boot, under the diff (Jaguar standard braces, the diff one being the ladder type) and now under the engine. I sure hope I can feel the difference when I drive the car  Roll Eyes

I have also put the Cabriolet back onto 15" lattice alloys running 225/60 15 tyres as the 16" ones were always meant for my coupe.

Cheers

Hi Brian,

I hope so it feels so much more solid than the tubular version you can get from Jaguar.

The photo was of the trial fit, the braces (front and back) are now in the workshop looking all shiny in black ready to be bolted up tomorrow once the car comes out of the spray booth (just some minor cosmetics to make it look nicer). Needless to say I did none of this and entrusted it all to my local man.

Cheers
Mark

And the job most noticeable, the single rear foglight has been replaced by a pair, the rear looks so much more balanced with 2.
