Check Engine Warning
13.04.2012 at 07:16:45
Hi
Wife just called, the car has turned on the 'CHK ENG' light.
What will trigger that warning lamp on a 1992 3.2 battery in engine bay model ??
I'm far from home and need to guide her (or son...) through whatever things that must be checked before driving too much more.
She has not yet tried to restart and see if it goes away, but I guess that only happens with computers ?

Leo,
Tell her not to panic!
She needs to display the VCM code.
Tell her to turn off the ignition, turn it back on to position (II) - i.e DO NOT start the engine - and then press the VCM button (on the key pad on the right of the steering column).
She will see a message in the LCD display on the instrument panel, usually 'Fuel Fail' and a number. Tell us what that number is and it can be translated to identify the fault.
Sometimes a computer 'glitch' flags up a 'Check Engine' light when there isn't a permanent fault. In that case (or whenever a genuine fault has been cleared) you need to clear the computer memory before the Check Engine light disappears.
You can clear the computer memory by disconnecting the negative battery lead for 30 seconds (if you have the radio security code) or by a procedure removing the instrument pack fuse while the ignition is on but the engine not running.

Thanks for a super quick answer
I told her to push the VCM-button, but that was with engine running. I will see if I can guide her through and come back.

FUEL 44
And CHK ENG lamp does no longer light...
I found this on jagweb.com:
44:
Oxygen sensor circuit check. Looks for absence of feedback signal. Also if weak fueling error cannot be corrected by up to 12.5% enrichment, enrichment of 37.5% is applied and fault flagged if no corrective response is detected. Defaults to open loop operation.
Does that just mean dead oxygen sensor ?
I changed it some 10.000 km ago

OK, that code 44 indicates a fault / glitch in the Oxygen Sensor circuit - perhaps an over-rich or a weak fuel mixture condition.
If you've cleared the code and the Check Engine light doesn't return when the engine is started, forget about it - it was a temporary 'glitch'.
BTW, don't assume that because the fault is described as being 'in the oxygen sensor circuit' that it is necessarily a faulty Oxygen Sensor. That sensor could simply be doing its job - reporting a fuel/air mixture imbalance (temporary or otherwise).
