A question of Alternators...
20.04.2012 at 11:01:57

Morning all, I wondered if someone may be able to help me with an alternator conundrum...

The old 11AC has give up the ghost on my 420G, and to be honest wasn't a lot of use when it worked, so I'm looking for an easy upgrade. I know I need to bypass the ammeter and the charge control relay if I go with a later model, so that's not a problem, but I'm having trouble finding a model number.

Can anybody point me in the direction of an alternator that will swap straight in for the old unit (pulley and all), but produce 60 or more Amps? I'm working on the basis that not much changed between a '69 420G and it's 4.2 XJ6 brethren, but without a part number I can't find an autofactor who will help!

Many thanks

Alex

Ok, probably going for an 18ACR as it looks like the easiest swap and there are a few high output versions for sensible money. I think I will need to source a new bracket for it though as the 11ac is bigger. Please can anyone shed some light on a part number for the mounting bracket(s) for a 4.2 with the 18acr? Or even a year and model that used the same?

Just in case someone stumbles over this lonely little thread in the future, I thought I would post the expert advice I have received from the ever helpful WatJag gurus and the friendly chaps at Martin Robey - or at least my reduced version of their advice...

Don't bother looking for a bracket if you're changing alternator spec, it's a nightmare likely to end in a part that isn't right anyway! Too many variations and a lack of new parts mean it's easier to adapt the old one or fabricate a new one rather than run the risk of paying over the odds for a used one that may not fit anyway...So that is what I shall do!

I'll head back to to the big fat saloons forum where I belong now!

Fingers, would love to have been able to give you loads of info on what alternators fit what model XJ, but my knowledge of things with wires on them is very limited Embarrassed Suprized none of the series XJ boys were online to help, but they seem to have been quiet of late, hope you have more luck with the starship.
