Help - Outboard Brakes
27.04.2012 at 22:57:33

Some help please. I was looking at my rear outboard brakes this evening with a view to changing the pads and discs. However it was late and I stopped when I reached the rubber/plastic covers protecting the carrier bolts. What I am not sure about (so didn’t put it to the test today) was how to remove these to get at the bolts. Clearly not damaging them was my priority, but if I’m ever going to release the calliper I need to get them off. What is he trick. All my previous XJSs have been inboard so not come up against this one before.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.
Nick

Not sure for XJS, but on all the calipers I've seen the rubber bit is just a dust cover. there should be an endcap on them which you prise out and a internal hex (normally 7mm) bolt inside which you unscrew to remove the caliper once you loosened the brake pads. The rubber bit stays in place. Check the guide bolts for corrosion and replace if neccessary and lubricate, I normally use copperease but some people say rubber grease.
Again I don't know specifically how to retract the pads/pistons but they either push in or screw in.

To retract the pistons I put a G clamp on the caliper and gently tighten it with the bleed nipple open.
Regarding the pins with 7mm socket heads these can be a sod to remove. Get plenty of penetrating oil on as long as possible before dismantling (weeks ideally) a socket allen key with a T bar handle is best - you can then apply turning torque without side force and get someone to strike the centre of the T handle wit a copper mallet. Using an ordinary L shaped allen key pulls the pin over to one side and increases the torque necessay to release it.
Cheers
