a bit of fun

I am in the rare position of beying able to pay some one to do my car (due to an inheritance )
So my problem is do I hire a garrage strip it my self work all my spare time or just pay to have it done
Does diy give you any greater satisfaction
Then there is the problem do you upgrade and improve everything and improve the car and lose. Points at shows and suffer the disgusted looks of pureists or do you keep it genuine.  Cool

A lot depends on your mechanical skills, if the car in question is the 2.8 XJ6 in your other post I would keep it original, the brakes, steering and suspension were up to the performance of the 2.8, you state the bodywork and interior are good, so its only mechanical parts which are all available, so go for it!!

Hi golf ball  aword of caution Depending how much work needs doing on your XJS  If your going  to get it done by a restoration company Make sure they examine the car and give you a firm quote  before you proceed  Recently a man now dececed  spent  a whopping £45 - £60 thousand on a XJ-SC  and it wasent even in concours condition His famaliy  sold it at auction for £7 or £8  thousand I know  i met and spoke to the man at the NEC  when my car was in Champion of Champions 2004 all im saying is  be carefull  the cost of restoration  on an XJS  will easy outway the value of the car  Regards Bryan Thomas

I think I would get a quote for restoration, then go out and look for a pristine 4.0 ltr celebration, from past experiance unless you have sentimental attachment , restoring an old car never returns your investment. You see cars people have spent 20,000 on fetch half that,if they are lucky. Having had a V12 XJS and enjoyed it, with todays fuel prices, I would go for a 4.0 ltr much more to the gallon and not much ( if any) slower. The other advantage is that you could be driving it this summer, rather than working on it. Now to some people working on there cars is there idear of heaven, but I would much rather be driving it than laying under it !!   You pays your money, you take your chance as the saying goes.
All the best  Brian. Wink

I think if you were keen to do it yourself you probably wouldn't be asking the question - look at some of Brakebuster's posts for the amount of time involved. I've often wondered what a KWE breathed-on XJS would be like and if I had the spare cash................... Cheesy. So it sounds to me like a plan. Consider also J D Classics who do marvellous things with classic Jags but they definitely don't come cheap. Smiley

I love my xjs ,
I would normaly have a go my self but keep seeing the ball brake restoration pictures on here and shuddering at the amount of work , ( it looks nice in pictures but what lurks beneath ............) although I'm competent to do it
Can I really be bothers to scourse all the bits I need and then
Only work on it in my spare time , then it dargs on and on and on. ..............and on .........  Shocked

I have never done a full restoration myself but a number of colleagues have. They seem to have the car off the road for 2 years, spend a fortune and work hour after hour. When complete its driven to a few shows then sold on and even if they make a profit it probably works out at about a penny an hour.
Another colleague who specialises in Morgans buys rough or faulty cars, spends 2 to 3 months on them and sorts them thouroughly but not pristine or concours at a reasonable price. He makes a decent profit whether he sells the cars straight away or uses them for a while himself.
My feeling is you spend an awful lot more for a small improvement once you get the car beyond sound and driveable.
Cheers
