re-commision
28.04.2012 at 08:53:08
I have to re-commision my recently departed uncles jag
Its an xj6 2.8 four speed manual with overdrive
Can I have your tips please
Its been sat for twenty years on axel stands in a barn and its been dry stored (no coolant in engine ) as he didn't want the block to crack , no oil in sump , gearbox or diff
The body work is mint , the interior like new. And less than 5000 miles on clock
So I would realy like it running

Hi, refill oils, change oil filter, pump out any petrol left in tanks, should have evaporated by now,add coolant, remove spark plugs and squirt some plus gas or simular down bore, leave overnight, still with plugs out see if engine will turn over,if yes connnect battery and see if it will turn on key, turn over until oil light goes out. Replace plugs, points and condenser, add fuel. Once engine started don't forget the braking system will need a compleat o'haul, tyres will be knackered, check all hoses.
Good luck, let us know how it goes

Thanks for the advice
The executors of the estate want to sell the farm ,
My uncle left me the car in his will along with a lump sun
Uncle was paranoid about fire so he always stored things dry
And as for mice ,rats
No he had sixteen ferral cats running arround. The farm

Yes, you can get bits for them.
Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust will sell you the workshop manual and parts catalogue on CD for around £15.
Quite a few parts are still available from Jaguar Classic Parts and can be ordered on line.
Then there's a raft of independents: Barratts, Manners and Robeys are three near me, all supply parts which they make as well as OEM.
Then there are spares days twice a year at NAC Stoneleigh in Warwickshire.
Sounds like a nice car, any chance you could post a picture?

There are also a few Jag scrapyards in existence which may be able to help you source/provide you with parts

Plugs , leads changed , fuel system bled and new fuel in , oil in , water in ( haven't been able to bleed water system) , fan belts changed. I've even put upper cylinder lubricant into chambers , new battery ready to go on .
Anything I've missed before I turn engine ove ?
r
Thought I'd turn it over first with plugs out ( I. Seem to have good spark at all plugs ) all seems ok
Think I've coverd everything

I think I'd try turning it over by hand first with plugs out just to make sure nothings completely seized in there. Good luck with it, try and post some pics if you can.

Def turn over by hand, socket on crank, after being laid up for so long there is a chance of a valve being stuck open, you would not want to bend one by spinning it over on the starter, once engine free, turn over on starter with plugs out, get rid of any crud in the bores, until you have some oil pressure, fit plugs and away you go!! Well with a bit of luch, hope all goes well,
Brian
