How do I access bulbs for map reading lights ?
28.04.2012 at 14:33:06

I was aware the other day that the overhead map lights were not working, (Front and back), on my 2003 XJ.
I checked the fuses in the luggage compartment and sure enough the 5amp fuse was blown. I replaced it right away with a spare 5 amp and that blew as well. Anyway knowing that it's not the right thing to do I replaced it with a 10 amp fuse. The rear compartment map lights now work but not the front. My first thought is that a bulb has blown taking out the fuse, but surely there are 2 bulbs for the 2 lights?
Anyway I am confounded by how to access the bulbs. I'm sure the actual bulb cover does not come out so tried to remove the whole overhead console..the rear comes down a little but the front by the rear view mirror is hard to budge and I don't want to apply too much force. Any ideas.
Not wishing to complicate matters but the other evening while out in the dark I noticed that the footwell light is on all the time too. Also the centre console light glows all the time...I can switch it off with the centre switch but then the footwell lights come on even brighter. What on earth is going on??
Anyway I would like to start with that overhead console to check out the bulbs...thanks in advance for any help.

my car is 2005 s type and it took 2 of us to pull the centre overhead consol down starting from the front, there are six clipes 2 either side at front middle and back. then you will see the bulbs [yours may be the same set up???]

Thanks for the reply.
I have located the clips and started to pull it down a fraction, but the resistance is so great I feel the plastic starting to flex and I worry about it breaking.....the thing is I'm not even convinced that if I get it down I will see the bulbs perfectly intact and have wasted all the effort.
Why on earth the light bulb cover could not be withdrawn on its own I can't imagine.
It SHOULD be so simple !!
